I have this question for a very long time but always forget to ask. Today, it pops up again. I know that a CEX can be converted to DEX but I'm curious if there any differences between the converted DEX and an official DEX system in term of functionality. Will the converted DEX be able to install any DEX fw (from 1.00 to the newest one) without any issue ? Thanks
CeX2DEX converted are able to take on DEX firmware and features, however converted CEX2DEX console PS1 and PS2 disc based games are not region free unlike True DEX machines which I pop in Ntsc-J or PAL Ps1/2 games played without issues.
Awesome URL Strike Venom. I guess I should have googled harder. lol. anyway. Looks like it will behave like a DEX but this "Hardware limitations in the Drive Id's (OTP not set to 0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF) prevent from using burned ps3 and ps2 masterdiscs (they are recognized as data discs), this is a check performed by the drive's firmware." is a bummer. It's become a bit pointless since you can't test any of the build code that you have.
You can, it just can't be on BD-R. You are forced to use the disc emulation facility or make the project an HDD installable tittle.
oh ok. got it. If we have build code on discs (Pre-Alpha, Alpha...etc), are there ways to play them on CEX2DEX ?
Install rebug CFW on your CEX console, do the stuff to get the master key for your console, generate hacked eEID with DEX target ID. Use Rebug management tool to swap to full DEX mode. 100% safe if done right. Use REBUG REX for that.
Thanks for the info I_oliveira. I don't have a CEX2DEX console but I'll try to make one if I have time. The reason I'm asking is the market for official DEX consoles have been declining substantially comparing to 2-3 yrs ago (IMHO). Whenever there are buyers interested in getting a DEX console, most of the time, they have a second thought about the CEX2DEX option and 3/5 times they will go with the CEX2DEX route. That makes me wonder if a CEX2DEX can actually replace the DEX. From all the info I seen above, looks like it can do pretty much a DEX can do besides playing CD-R and different region PS1 games (DVD-R and different region PS2 games for the DECHA00A one)
The interesting stuff (debugging over ethernet, disc emulator, install and run compiled stuff, play beta game data) a convert can do. Of course for the serious collector or a real developer will want the real deal. But basically yes, a convert will do all you want but disc stuff and you won't be able to disable HDCP.
Heres a short video I took regarding the true DEX unit. I tested using a self burn copy of PS 1 game and works without a hitch, also tested a pirated copy of a PS2 game and it works as well! It was truly a surprise for me as I though that I could only run original PS1/2 titles regardless of regions.
Thanks for the vid kyo86sg. I know the DECHA00 can run multi-region PS2 games but i didn't know it also boots PS2 backup without patching the image as master. The PS2 TEST require master patching for back up games. Otherwise it won't boot.
Can't you just hack the main system firmware to not care? The drive doesn't lock out disk read commands for unrecognized disks. I suppose that lv1 could be modified to use a custom algorithm for detecting disk type, where it reads the disk data to determine type. Like, check for the existence of certain files, and for CDs, check whether system.cnf has a BOOT2= entry.
You still need to mount the filesystem. Actually that's what the managers do. So you're like three years late to this party. Anyway, some games do check if a game bluray were authenticated anyway. So a few games won't play without a real authenticated PS3 disc on the drive. (doesn't matter if it's the same game, just if it's authenticated with the drive security...)
