I've been reading up on the PS3 downgrade process. Common ways include placing a clip over the NOR chip or soldering 50 wires to it (E3 linker). Since I have a universal programmer that supports each of the 56-pin TSOP chips, would I be able to put that to use instead of buying the E3* tools?
For clarity, I mean desolder the NOR with hot air, placing it in a generic 56 pin TSOP clip and programming the chip outside of the mobo.

hi zz , i have a E3 Flasher and Clip it's quite easy to use. Desoldering the NOR is risky and soldering wires is more work than using a E3 Flasher and Clip , i recommend the Tutorial i used.

I have done tons of PS3 downgrades. Throws the clip or the E3 Flasher in the toilet: the brick is virtually guaranteed. If you really don't want to give the job to a professionale modder, at least try to make your professional work: buy a Teensy++ 2.0

I'd just use a teensy, desoldering Tsop chips isn't super risky but putting them back on can be a pain, it'll be quicker to use the teensy or e3 with clip (or use a teensy with a good quality tsop clip)

    The 360 clip?

Spend monies on a good tsop clip but from what I've been told, they usually are bad because of the nature of how they work.
This thread has given me new interest in the ps3 scene

Please.....Clips are EVIL! DON'T USE THEM!
You can much secure dump a NOR PS3 with Teensy++2.0 and direct solder on Test Points just like this:

Or you can use Teensy++2.0 with a Zif Socket if you have an old FAT DUAL NAND PS3 just like this:

    And naturally...manually validate your dump!

If you file the clip down correctly so no resistors make contact then you shouldn't have any problems. I've only downgraded 100 or so PS3 and never had an issue with the E3 + clip. I also use a clip for nand consoles as well.

With using a clip comes risk, so verify the shit out of the dumps.

You did 100 PS3s with the same clip? I heard they can wear out after a few uses.

I use the clip also alot of times

It depends on the clip, some can wear out quick, while some other one(al e3 clips btw), can go on for a LOT of consoles

If you file the clip on the good spots(where the resistors are sitting for each motherboard), its fits most of the time perfectly on the first try.

The only motherboard (from my experience) that can be picky, is the one in the 21xx consoles.
    Needs a very good connection.
If it doesn't dump it the second time, I am always using wires
Better to be safe then sorry :p

Yes, same clip every time. I do not clamp/smash the clip down with penny etc; so maybe that's why mine has lasted so long?

I think maybe with the correct tip it would almost be faster to solder the wires on

I agree that the E3 clip I own seems flakey at best.

    Absolutely not :D
I would do it if I didn't own the tools that I do, and have done such things in the past. Maybe acceptable for a 'quick job' such as dumping/flashing on the cheap though!

What makes the teensy++ preferable over any generic/universal programmer that supports the NOR chips?

I actually own that such a zif socket for tsop56 chips. I don't have the xeltek but a comparable wellon universal programmer, so I was thinking going this route makes a lot of sense. I'd be very confident about desoldering the NOR flash, dumping/rewriting it using a universal programmer and soldering it back on. No issue there, I do BGA chips at home if I have to. My main concern is whether I can generate a proper file for my NOR if I'm not using the default utilities.

What i mean is using the evil cheap clip is a "kid job" for the begginers. In my mods job i desolder nands and nor everytime....cause it's much time saving & proof dump idiot. For the Achieviers maybe it's much more reccomended to solder on test points even to use these Clip shits....
I really saw many bricked Ps3 because of "Clip kids at job"....howewer i have no reason to debunk your theory, i speak from personal experience made on years of downgrades...probably you have magic tools like clips that come from Mars?

The dump you get from teensy and e3 are same you will get from a universal programmer. All the tools will work fine.

I have done nand and nor downgrades with my elnec

Yes indeed...a dump is a dump...even if it's byte reversed or not.

I fundamentally disagree with everything you just said about "clip kids".

There's a method that must be employed when using either 48p or 56p TSOP clips.

The majority of people do it wrong, and then blame the clip for being garbage. I'm actually designing some hardware for this. I'd like to write a better "clip guide" for people interested in using them. There's absolutely no reason to remove the package from the board if you buy a set of cheap clips. Getting 1:1 reads and writes by properly employing top mount clips is a walk in the park. The 360-CLIPS are quite decent.
