http://kotaku.com/gaming/ps3/check-your-euro-ps3-bc-245549.php "Sony has launched a site for Euro PS3 owners to see what PS2 and PS1 games they can play on their shiny new console come March 23rd. Games are listed by console type, with three levels of compatibility...working perfectly, working with tiny problems, and working with major problems. The list covers the new 1.6 firmware revision, so some of the titles the Inquirer tested are now listed as fully compatible, such as God of War and Shadow of the Colossus. While the list is by no means complete, it still represents a sizeable chunk of the previous systems' libraries, roughly 72%, and with updates that figure is guaranteed to grow. It's already much better than the 360, which wouldn't let me play Armed and Dangerous this weekend, a mortal sin if I ever heard one." So what is everybody's take now? Personaly I still remember the bashing and that things were going to be around 30%. While still far from perfect and many big games are still missing (nooo MGS2), it's alot better then what everybody predicted. Still does not touch first model ps3 with HW BC but yet still is far above and beyond the 360.
I do see a lot of one and two star games tho which means glitchy fun for all I still do wonder if the US PS3 1.6 firmware enables emulation for US consoles. It would be nice to have the option to play in HD for the fully compatible titles.
I mention this on another forum but personaly I think it would be cool if first model ps3 are given the option to be able to play the software via HW BC or Software BC (with all the bells and wistels). It can also all be accessable via the triangle sub menu. I could so see people running out in the USA and buying all remaining units over this.
hmmm I can even see in the future, that the modchips to the HW PS3 will perhaps have an option in them, so they can turn HW BC on.
Screw modchips. I'm betting on firmware hacking like on the psp. Suposetly it might even be posible to mod the firmware to load ps2 iso off the hdd as well. lol Yet truthfuly I would just be happy for them to hack the firmware to crack region locking on ps1/2 software.
Wouldn't suprise me considering how badly the PSP was hit with firmware modders. Any version PSP is easily software hackable. Latest homebrew fw allows: All homebrew to run All UMD's to run PSOne ISO's to run PSP ISO's to run It's sort of sad...if it weren't so awesome
Although the list is far bigger then the 360's backwards compatability, I have a bad feeling that many of the games are going to have a shitload of issues, even if they seem to be in "good" standing. I don't see Sony playing every single game in it's entirety to see if certain parts of the game are working fine. EDIT: Something I just noticed on a list of stuff Sony recommends: "You should skip optional FMV sequences (a small number of games have graphical corruption in one or more video sequences)." THATS NOT A VERY GOOD THING!
Would have been nice is Sony had a search option on that site or the ability to download the entire list. Going through that list a page at a time is a pain in the ass and I suspect that was Sony's intention. The big question though is will Sony continue to fix the games with issues or did they just get them running at a minimum to be able to add them to the list?
72% compatible makes it sound wonderful in comparison to what Joystiq have worked it out as. Graphs inc. As mentioned in the other topic, here's a rundown of compatibility: http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/20/breaking-down-the-euro-ps3s-backward-compatiblity/ (as previously stated) For the lazy people: not good news. Over 70% of PS1 games and over 55% of PS2 games will have errors or won't play at all. Games that won't work at all (supposedly) include: * Metal Gear Solid 2, * Final Fantasy VII, * Resident Evil 2 * all the Ratchet and Clank games There are also noticeable errors in: Metal Gear Solid and Tomb Raider IIon the PS1 and Final Fantasy X, Kingdom Hearts, SingStar, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on the PS2.
I'm more bothered about PS2 games that PS, though in an ideal situation both would be fully compatible.
Well it depends. My HDTV doesn't contain a scaler so it would benefit me if the software emulation bumps up the resolution of PS2 games. However, by the time I buy one it will be the new revision, no doubt. I own a PS2, so it's not the end of the world. I'd rather see the upscale as an option - hopefully Sony will get more games up to 3 stars by the time I have an interest in buying a PS3.
I shall say this once more. If you ve seen Resident Evil 4 for the PC at 1080p, you d think it's one ugly game. Yet on the GC it looked perfectly beautiful. Why? Because just upscalling something doesn't make it pretty, that's why ;p The benefit of upscalling thus is no benefit at all. I d take a US/JPN PS3 any day over a PAL one.
480p is nice indeed! And ..well, I will own a ps2 soon enough thanks to the kindness of another member here
I thought the reason the PC version looked like ass was because they removed every single instance of shading in the game that make it look good?
and the textures looked shit as well, due to the fact that they wre not designed with hi-res in mind.
