Wow, this is even worse than i expected... i was just over at our local big electronics chain, and they have a full stack of PS3 systems. I had to check for a few things and spent about an hour in the store, and when i left, that very stack was untouched - not a single one was gone. Given that this is a really big, successful shop (one of the biggest in Munich) and their sell through rate on the second day of release is "zero consoles / hour" sounds like a total disaster for the german launch. I got curious and asked the shop guy if its not selling well, and he told me they sold 3 or 4 systems today (in 5 hrs). Well no bloody wonder with the 360 next to it at precisely half price. What about other EU countries - hows the launch been going there? tubo
Just had a look around whilst on my lunch break and everywhere has loads with signs up saying "PS3 Instock Now!".
It seems to be the trend in the UK, every HMV I've seen this weekend including London had the "PS3 in Stock Now" sign at the entrance. It comes at no surprise at £425 they are having a laugh really, even with the Bluray player it still delivers little value over the 360 not to mention the Wii, six axis bouhhhh. Having said that, I was still thinking of buying one to satisfy my curiousity but since there are no VGA adapters and I don't own an HDTV, what's the point... Unless a price drop occurs fairly quickly I don't see the situation changing until a big title like MGS4 and FF gets released... Sad really...nice machine but too elite for the moment... At least it's out now, Christmas could have made a difference for them. 360 is still a better option, more games, Live...And all the people I know who owns it say they are far from being impressed so far... Sabre
thats because demand IS SO HIGH CRAZY KUTARAGI IS DELIVERING THEM BY HIMSELF!! zomg.. its no secret the PS3 is selling badly, there are no salesrecords to be found anywhere and you can bet that if the PS3 really was flying off the shelves Sony wouldnt be quiet about it
@sabre470 Spot on -- i am also far from saying its an indecent piece of kit. I would actually think Sony will recover from this as the big guns release impressive titles, alongside the inevitable price drop (which is when i ll think about getting one). But for now, this is as cocked up a console launch as it gets. never seen anything like it from a market leader. tubo
Most unimpressive launch I have ever lived through, especially considering it's a PlayStation not your new Tiger handheld or Zodiac!
I know it's pretty poor, makes you wonder in which state is Sony overall??? It all started with the PSP, great system, great technology where are the games??? With the PS3 at the beginning it was: Where are the machines? Now there are plenty but it's too expensive... They can do way better than that. I think they made way too much sacrifices to get such a huge machine to the market, first "poor Cell yield" = delay then "don't really know how to produce blue lasers" = delays, now it's "in 2-3 years time you'll see great games" WTF oh and in between we had "do you really think we should put a GPU in this machine?" hum yeah 3D ala Starfox was a couple of generations behind sir, ah ok MS is pissed off with Nvidia let's call 'em... Now they have to deal with what's on the market and it's going to take some time to ship a good steady amount of boxes each quarter and this time competition is fierce. Last generation it was easy for them with DC, GC and Xbox, but now everybody's learned something except Sony. As I said before PS4 will be great for the moment PS3 is a "hum...yeah...will see...let's get a Wii first, looks fun..." Sabre
the launch in italy suffered the same problem... lots of people drooling but nobody's buying due to the crazy price.... anyway now that i've see a x360, a ps3 and a wii (and owning a wii) i can share my impression. My impression is that the potential of PS3 is really high, and so is the "wow factor" for example the wii had a nice one, the PS3 showed what might come out soon... and 360... didn't excite me at all maybe it's something wrong in me... also i'm growing more and more unhappy with my wii and the lack of really good games that makes good use of the wiimote... i mean beside zelda (that is a gamecube game to be honest) there's nothing really appealing... were's mario? were's metroid and mainly were's F-ZERO? i consider the best games for the wii to be ALL on the virtual console... quite sad IMHO... i don't desire a 360 at all but i wish i could buy a PS3 at 360's price. does it explain it well? another thing that i was quite pleased by, with the PS3 is the playstation store prices... Now, those are reasonable, not like the virtual console's one! but, returning to the point, yes, the PS3 launch is historically weak If sony realyzes that the right price is around 300-350$ they might get out of this situation... otherwise, the more they wait the darker the painting will be
karsten, why don't u like the 360? and why do u think the ps3 is worth any money at all at the moment?
So far this generation has been something of a let down. Hopefully once the PS3 gets into its stride we'll see the competition force all to up the ante a bit.
What PS3 launch? It's like it never happened. There was more of a fanfare the last time I opened a new roll of Andrex.
I'm going to have to agree with Taucias. This 'new' generation has done little to excite me, and even if I were excited about any of the current consoles, it's not like I could afford any of them. I'm going to stick with my XBOX, GC, and PS2 for now, seeing as I have plenty of unfinished games for those systems anyway.
I have no idea it's a matter of feelings while getting around in BIOS, in games, everything seems wrong, too PC-like for saying so... and i'm not talking about it being a microsoft product for example the feelings i got from the first xbox were "better". actually i think that the PS3 isn't worth AT ALL his money so far... but actually i think that x360 and wii (expecially wii) too are still not worth ALL the money they cost. i think the real battle will start in 1 year, when real masterpieces will surface on each console... This said, PS3 have at least a _small_ excuse to be taken if you have a HD TV... By the way, as an offtopic, is it just me, or the x360 games look uglier in standard definition the ps3 games do? My friend brought both machine to my home and it looked like that... is it a matter of not supporting properly standard definition resolution on the 360 or the problem was in the games we tried? (both machine looked perfect on his 50" HD TV set obviously )
oh man i remember that.. good times  anyways i hafta say that the PS3 is the only console to really strike me as "next-gen" out of the 3 available, it really is a quality product.
if anything, X360 games look better for a variety of reasons. The most important is that the developers are more familiar with the 360 and the other is that the GPU of the 360 is really good (and better than the PS3's imo) and Anti Aliasing comes at no extra penalty. PS3 games look quite 'jaggy'
Sadly, it also happens to be true. Number of people who turned up to launch of PS3 at my local independent store and actually bought a PS3..... 2! (fucking 2) Number of people standing in the hallway at the time I needed to grab another roll of toilet paper this morning..... 3 (wife, son & daughter (who was late for school, but not as a result of me using the toilet or grabbing another roll of toilet paper)) I think it's fair to say Sony must be rather concerned (not about my toilet habits, but about the launch), but I feel there might be a connection. Discuss. ;-)
here in spain the PS3 is in stock in all the stores, i guess that with the policy of sony to discriminate europeans, most people dont buy ps3, here always sony release his software and hardware later, more expensive and with the worst quality, in spain ps3 cost 599€ that are around 670$, in spain the ps3 was released 23th march 2007 with 18 games, in usa was released on 17th november 2006, in spain only have the 60gb pack, the 20gb will be arrive on summer, in usa the 20gb was released on the launch, retrocompatibility in usa is with hardware, in spain (europe) is with software... well with this arguments i only can say SONY SUCKS!
In Greece PS3 is out of stock... everywhere! Typical Greeks, overexcited as always. No wonder it costs 60 more euros here.
..yet the Wiis in greece sit in Shelves. Here I am, not being able to find a single god-damn US/NTSC wii for myself. Most greeks should be shot in the balls for their PS3 choice despite being suckered into a higher price. I was thinking of writing a letter of caution to the Commission about this subject, in the light of Articles 81 and 82 of the relevant Competition Law regulations, but if I did that, and the price went down to 600 euros, even more morrons would buy the PS3. PS: Traditionaly, if a firm makes a product expensive in Greece, they can't go wrong. In Greece price=quality (For some reason) and people are more than happy to choose the more expensive of the two, even if it's the same object. They are insecure fools.
