It seems they were lying all along; in an effort to "refocus on core businesses"
Sony has sold the CELL division to toshiba.

    What does this mean?

The PS3 is disposable, and Sony is prepared to walk away from it
if need be to save the company.

If I were you, I wouldn't buy a PS3 unless some greatgames were about to come out...

Sure, they will save some costs, but a meager 900 million on a 4 billion expense....

    Can't be good.

    i think you're too pessimistic, kev :)

by the way 900 million over 4billion it's around 20%, not so bad at all.

and by the way, i've sent you countless PMs.... will you ever send an answer? :/

    karsten

Have you? My inbox is empty amigo...

Make sure your "sent" box isn't full, if it's full and it tries to fill the "sent" folder, it
    will send nothing at all.

impossible... :p i can't find an explanation for this... i've been sending PMs to other people with no problems...

ehy haven't you filtered my PMs? :D maybe i was too annoying :p

    Try sending me some.

Maybe Toshiba will slow down production of Cell processors so Sony can't sell enough PS3 to beat HD-DVD players :110:

Anyway Chip production is not Sony's core business, they are now more of a technology aggregator than a chip maker, running a Fab is extremely expensive and looking at the yield they had initially on producing the Cell it seems their lack of knowledge in that area is finally taken under consideration.

If I was an investors at Sony I would be comfortable with this decision, Sony needs to focus on shoving boxes and sell software.

they re just budgetting, it's not a matter of PS3 focus.

The truth is that their financials need fine-tuning, especially after the lackluster sales of the PS3 compared to what they expected (and have invested)

Whatever can keep the boat afloat really.

How does this imply that the PS3 is on the way out?

What a load of old rubbish. Supposedly Sony is contracting chip fab out to china/taiwan to cut costs in the future, and cutting some fat left over from when Kutaragi was in charge.

Not saying that, but it's a bit like a mason selling his bricks to someone else, and then paying them to make a wall for him.

Not really. It's like a Mason buying bricks instead of buying an area of clay soil, digging them out of the earth, shaping them, firing them, shipping them to the building site, then using them to build a wall.

It would appear that Sony is moving to a more fab-lite model of business. Semiconductor fabs have become incredibly expensive in recent years - there is a trend now developing in the industry to move the more cutting edge (and most expensive) side of manufacture/development to outside foundries (who consolidate costs by manufacturing for multiple customers). Cell was a joint development (between Sony/Toshiba/IBM) anyway & Sony corporations will still retain 40% ownership of the cell fab that Toshiba are taking a majority ownership in.

PS2 chips are already made by a joint-venture between Sony/Toshiba - this has been reported to be transferring to Toshiba at the end of the current joint-venture agreement in 2008.

they are giving up a long term money maker for an infusion of short term cash. Doesn't look really good, but then again, they could just focus more on stuff like the ps3 instead.

What's amazing is that things can happen in this generation that would mean MS and Sony might not even bother with another console. All this while nintendo is still sitting pretty actually making money, instead of establishing brand recognition or eating millions of dollars in losses.

Sony is not the only company to do something like this.

Phillips - sold off its semiconductor sites then employ them to make chips.
Airbus - plans to sell off some sites but still use them to make aircraft structures
Its a part of modern business. Your reading too much into it.

Heh, personally I think the unprecendented number of SKUs and multiple price drops WITHIN A YEAR OF RELEASE is a bigger indicator of the bad condition Sony is in.

"Risk sharing" is Airbus` buzz word for it.

Feel the love for Sony in this thread.
