I'm thinking of picking up a PS3 kiosk unit today, I don't know where it came from so don't ask, but I know it's most likely got some restricted features (as per every kiosk I've ever played with). What I'm wondering is: 1. Is there a way to unlock it and turn it into a "normal" PS3 (it's a 60GB) through "factory reset", swapped SATA drive, etc.? 2. If not, would any of you be interested in it (as I would have no use for it)? I've seen some codes online to allow firmware updates, but so far found nothing to completely remove the "demo unit" restrictions from the thing.
Heya. As far as the PS3 kiosks go... Originally, they came as full-featured (read: retail) boxes, but later on, Sony reps came around and updated the firmware and made them 'kiosks'. aka. They have a timed reset. So just check your firmware. Other than that, they run very hot I find. On this first day I set one up in my store, I threw in COD2. We had it running for a few hours, then it froze. One of my employees took the disk out and came over to me proclaiming "check it out!" and proceeded to bend the disk to and fro. Seriously. I flipped on him, as it was our copy!
I know some PS3 kiosks/displays have a dummy unit...like just a PS3 shell up top (with fake cardboard/pics for ports and whatnot). Is the *real* unit housed out of sight or are some kiosks different?
Is it just the system you are getting, or the whole shelf display with the PS3 behind the clear plexi-glass? The display would be kind of cool to have...
From what I've heard your supposed to hilight some option called "security settings" and press L1 + R1 + SELECT + SQUARE Then in will ask for a 4 digit security code. The correct code will give you unretricted access to the ps3. Never tried this myself thought, so I don't know how true this is Also was two more rumors of it probably being default to 0000 and someone else saying it starts on 8?
Thanks for the info. Most of it is the same as the stuff I've seen via Google searches. I didn't end up buying it anyway, but good to know in case I ever see another one. Psycho: It was just the PS3 unit, not the display, if it had the display I would have bought it in an instant.
