hey guys i just bought a ps3( ceche01 fat ) on ebay that had a dead disk drive and an overheating problem, i got it today and the disk drive is deffinatly fubar ( the motor that spinns the disk wont move ) but the ps3 works with the dvd drive motherboard connected. anyways when i took it apart i found that there was no very little contact on the cpu heatsync and the old owner of the console got arctic silver 5 all over the mother board :/ anyways i put more tension on that part and new thermal paste on the chips. now when i turn it on the ps3 overheats really fast and i can hear the fans roaring but it doesnt seem like any air is going in or out of the console any tips? also can i update the console with just the dvd drive motherboard installed or would that cause problems

tldr: ps3 fat ceche01 over heats in 5 mins, fans come on FULL SPEED, seems like theres no airflow at all ( i cleaned the console ), also with just the dvd drive motherboard attached can i update the console. any help is much appriciated

I had a 60gb that I bought which does the same thing :( old ower took it to some dodgy shop to get fixed and when I opened it it was full of that cheap Chinese thermal paste crap (grey sludge). Cleaned it but still overheats, you COULD TRY removing the heatspreaders and re-applying thermal paste there (you will need thermal glue also to stick em back on.)

The temp sensor could be buggered :(

As far as cleaning, I suggest getting a big old bottle of IPA (plain rubbing ALCH will do) and wash the mmotherboard.

Yes you can still update so long as you have the drive pcb connected, that is all the sw will look for. No pcb and the update will stick on 40% or so. Installing a CFW can get around this..

is there a way to replace the heat sensor? im pretty sure thats what it is. :( i had it running out of the case just on the xmb and the fan got to the loudest ive ever heard. its either that or a bad heat spreader on the rsx i believe, it doesnt seem to touch 100% probably less than 50%

no you cant replace them its part of the processor..

maybe try this, get two pc heatsinks and stick them to the cpu and rsx outside of the case with a fan blowing on them and see what happens..

Pop the heat spreader off the cell, odds are the compound is super dry and not moving heat to the heatsink. Pc heat sinks arent going to solve the problem since the heat isnt even getting to the heat spreader. I use a sanded down exhaust feeler gauge to cut under the cell spreader tp remove it. Ill post a link when I get home of the process. I can guarantee you this will fix it, I have fixed 5 of these today for customers.
