Given the CELL production problems, industry analysts are predicting ps3 won't be in volume until mid 2007.

source claims that "Sony does not posses a magic wand" and that slapping the GeForce 7900GT was an error, since it would take approximately same amount of time to make a dedicated GPU for the cause. The error part is pretty way off-balance, but don't shoot the messenger. The source claims that the fall launch is just hitting Christmas with a number of titles, but with real console unavailability (can you say: paper launch?), which is guaranteed to piss distributors off and just about turns a lot of the market to the Microsoft side. Real availability is expected at the mid Q2 2007, right about the time of E3 2007.

So expect a drought of systems until mid 2007, so pre-porder might be your only way to get one months after launch.

A 7900GT? didn't sony learn ANYTHING of the Xbox experience? dont fucking outsource system parts...

About the lack of stock, hell that doesnt matter, the PS2 had the same problem and it only increased the hype around it.

The X360 is different, in the consumer mind the new Xbox isnt in a better position than the one Dreamcast had. After all the Xbox was barely above GC in the last gen, so when X360s were running out after launch people just lost interest and the pre-launch hype made by MS evaporated.

PS3 is different, sony doesnt needs to make a MTV show to create hype...

According to all the system spec reports the GPU is custom but based on the 7800GTX. Sony are manufacturing the chip themselves and own the rights to it (which is why it cost them so much to develop initially).

I'd guess that the controlled manufacture is an attempt to limit loses before the end of the tax year, but at the price Sony are asking I would imagine sales would be low enough to match their predictions. Bleh.

I knew they couldnt be so stupid as to buy the GPUs directly from nVidia...

To develop a GPU that competes with the established competition would be too expensive and out-scourcing the design is a necessity from now on, it would seem. nVidia and ATI have got it sewn up.

I meant buying the parts directly from the "other company" like MS did with Intel and nVidia in the Xbox.

    This just begs the question...

Who has a PS3 on preorder for the purpose of reselling for mega $$$?

My PS3 will arrive asap... that means 2008 or later

Not only because of the cost (for me, it will be at least 3x more), but it's because with Sony you have to wait at least a year to check their manufacturing quality, not to mention if the promised features will actually become reality.

Plus it's pointless to buy one of the next gen consoles, if you haven't got at least an EDTV. The cheapest 42' Plasma EDTV in Brazil costs about 3.300 dollars. I'm not even going to talk about HDTV's.

A lot of people complained and joked about the Xbox360 problems, when they spend 400 dollars + a certain ammount of money on games. Now imagine the PS3 for 600$ + a couple of games + second controller, .... And after some time the famous PlayStation problem happens : READ DISC ERROR.

For those getting it at launch, Good Luck :smashed:

Man, I hate these situations. Will we ever see a launch when I can actually buy a system? Last one I remember was the GC. Got it Tesco :-D
