Last night I got my mates ps3 to test (and possibly fix/buy) he said it had been playing up but didnt say too much.(its an old fat original 80GB model).

Tried it and it came on fine and updated via the internet. I went into the kitchen to make a drink and when I came back it was just a black screen!
It wouldnt respond to anything so I turned it off at back and tried it again, came on ok and re started then went to black screen again - but this time I could hear it through TV but screen was blank - re put in the hdmi cable and came back on then a few seconds later black screen.

Repeated this a few times and it kept going to black screen and wouldnt respond to anything, (even trying to power it off via the touch button at front).

I have read that the graphics cards can go on older ps3 models but wanted to know if anyone here knew anything?

If you hold the power button down for like 10 seconds, it'll do a hard reboot, which I think might undo the update, but I'm not sure.

Depending on what stage the update was in (hopefully stage 1) you can pull the HDD format it in a PC (Fat32 will do) throw it back in, and boot into the recovery menu. Run update from there.

Same issue happened to me this last week.
