So, i got this ps3 a while ago in HK. laser not working, but everything else was fine. Got a replacement laser, installed it, popped a disc in, starting reading it, but a few seconds later, nothing. frozen. and from then on, wouldnt read discs.... with the new laser... :(
Anyway, took it to a place to get it fixed, but they said something else is broken, that is not the laser, and that is too expensive to fix, not worth it.
so i have a ps3, two lasers that supposedly work, but i cant play games.

my question is: can i install a hdd and play games from the hdd without the laser working? if yes, is there any good tutorial out there? i googled but found lots and lots of crap. that's why im asking here. hope someone can help, thanks a bunch!

There are a lot of digital games on PSN. There is no need for tutorial to register on PSN.

ODE (Cobra, 3K3Y, E3) or downgrade with hardware flasher if console was manufactured before 2011. If PS3 firmware <= 3.55 you can install CFW without downgrade.

    Thanks for the info, Riki.

    Console has 4.31.

It's a CECHG12 3-279-629-11, im not sure when it was manufactured.

Without having the laser drive even installed, can i make this run backups from the hdd? if yes, how? thanks a bunch!

CECHG is hard to downgrade. But it is possible afaik. ODE maybe needs a working drive or at least bd controller. Dunno about that.
I do not know any good tutorials. Maybe psx-scene.com has them.

Thanks again, Riki. Before spending money on one of those mod boards, can anyone tell me for sure if you can play the backups from the hdd, even if your bd laser is gone/not working properly? I have been reading a few websites, including the official sites for the boards, but can't get a definite answer... :S
    Thanks again.

Well last time a friend of mine was in the ps3 soft mod scene you need a disc in the tray to play from HDD right now I dont know maybe and maybe not. You should check on a ps3scene forum to see the status of the custom firmwares of the dongles and how they work now.

I would like someone that knows to reply to my question. Everywhere i check it talks about other things, never specifies about needing the bd laser to work. Thanks.

Note that ODEs usually need a spearate hard drive, so you'll probably want to factor that into the costs too.

@rso: I already have a 500gb notebook hdd that i want to use with it... or if i can use desktop hdd, i have a 4tb im not using as well, hehe... the ps3 is a 40gb cechg12 bought in hong kong.
do you know if i can use an ode to play games from the hdd even if the actual bd laser doesnt read discs?or even with the ode does it check if there is an actual disc in the tray or something like that? :S
    thanks.

    Booting requirements :
    - Cobra ODE requires an original disc to be inserted in the drive at all times to boot the Cobra ODE
manager and run games from HDD. The game disc used must be supported by the Cobra ODE
database. A current list of supported titles is available in the downloads section of our website. We
will provide updates to expand the list of supported titles.
