I'm typing this on my PS3 so it hasn't become a huge problem yet, but I see it could in the future. I have a 320 gig SLim PS3 that pretty much since I got it has been freezing randomly when I exit the web browser. Sometimes a full freeze sometimes the XMB doesn't show up. However tonight while downloading and installing Skullgirls int he background it froze while installing the game to the point where I had to unplug the system to turn it off. The System is functioning but this freezing is bugging me, The PS3 isn't the 360 so I know freezing isn't a sign of impending doom but why is the system freezing? Would a hard drive swap fix things?
Sorry to ruin your new found Sony fanboyism, but locking up and freezing isn't a Microsoft problem. Bga chips are Bga chips. It certainly could just be the hard drive, but leave the fanboy nonsense out of it.
Unfortunately, I have always found the PS3's system software to be pretty buggy. Even the latest firmware does strange things sometimes on all three PS3s I've owned (had one a couple of days ago where the PSN logon screen just showed the two lines - turns out there was a software update, but it wasn't displaying the error message). The lockups surrounding the web browser are not uncommon, and usually happen when exiting out. I've had it bug out when installing software too, but usually only if the WiFi drops (fixed it by using a wired connection instead). It may be a sign of an overheat, but only if the fan is running loud. It could also be related to the drive, but usually you'd get an error off the back of it. Three questions: * Are you running the latest firmware (and not a cracked one)? - I assume so since you say you're downloading/installing stuff from PSN. * Are you connected to the internet via Wifi or wired? If you're on Wifi, is it good where your PS3 is? * Is your PS3 doing anything else you consider odd - e.g..: fans revving up often, taking a long time to start-up, crashing often when playing games?
All I said was in my experience when a 360 starts freezing it's a sign of Impending doom and that I'm not sure if that's the same case with the PS3 or Not. 6 Months Question 1- Yes it's the most recent update freezing isn't as constant since the updates but it is still there. Question 2- Wifi and I get a good signal where I am Question 3- I think my PS3 crashed during a game once just after I got it, other than while it was installing Skullgirls last night It's never froze downloading or installing a game once. But a game didn't download properly once and got corrupted during an install. Other than that nothing weird.
No, you said as its not an 360 - so you know its not a sign of impending doom (i.e. its not an issue for Sony consoles).
Well, is it not a stated fact that freezing 360s are near the dreaded RROD/RRDD? It is in my experence. But I don't think freezing PS3s are a sign of impending hardware failure. As far as I know there aren't any YLOD warning signs.
Sure there are, its the exact same problem on both consoles. If you get any warning on either console - its pure luck as to which solder balls have broken and that they arent critical to boot up. While it may not be your issue - if you dont know what you are talking about (which is quite clear), maybe its best not to assign blame or implications you dont understand. Which is where the fanboyism is showing, which is well known with you over the last 6 months or so (shockingly enough - matches with when you bought one!) Also, if swapping the HDD is the fix - what is a failing hdd, other than impending hardware failure? (while not as severe as a soldered chip, its a hardware failure all the same).
I'm just going by what I know and It is pretty well known which system is known for it's Hardware failures and which gets them, but they aren't as common.
What you know, like installing windows killing your laptop? I will take your hardware knowledge with a pinch of salt, but others who dont know better might not - which is my main abjection to your comment. Which was basically "I know it freezing up isnt a hardware issue, as its made by Sony". YLOD happens, (quite a lot actually on the early consoles, I have stacks of 60gb consoles with YLOD). RROD happens, but again mostly on earlier console revisions. At least Microsoft stepped up and did 3 years warranty for the issue, sony didnt. The Wii also suffers with this, but much less (smaller and thicker PCB, less movement) but it still happens too. No one is immune and it often starts with freezes and graphical glitches.
Well Windows 8 disk formatting tool formats my SSD in such way so Intel ACHI firmware hangs on drive initialisation in BIOS.
That's not dead. Disable raid option rom, reformat and then complain about Intel bug. Anyway, If your bios doesn't get updates, you can add in updated Intel raid rom yourself. Can find you the appropriate link if you like.
