Sounds like it's getting overheated, try removing all dust inside it, it might be really dusty thus causing overheating issues.

hope i have the right screw driver at home ;)

i tried putting a large blower at the back of the console blowing cool air in ... and it worked for aprox 1 hour .. then freezed

Try the fan test, It runs the fans at 100% and blows like a crap load of dust out, Worked for a friends ps3.

the FAN test ??? where the hell is that .. i searched in the menus and didnt find ;(

its not a proto (no transparent case)

is there a workaround for that overheating problem ? adding some fans ... ?

you video chip needs to be reworked with a bga rework kit i leave that to some who know what there doing as its costley buts it worth it as its a rare test kit if you find some one that can do it make sure you ask them to use lead solder insaid of lead free witch is crap i had it done to my xbox 360 i never used a heat gun as it damages the chips so my xbox 360 will run forever i have never had the ring of death since i had it done by a mate of mine

so i totally disassembled the unit today .... there is only a very very minimum of dust on the mainpcb and on the fan ....

about the rework ... i saw that the RSX is sitting on an extra pcb and that is again mounted with BGA to the mainboard (so thats like double BGA mounted) ... i think to rework that will be quite an effort ;(

also i got an answer from a rework company in germany and they wont rework consumer products

another thing ... if i ever get this fixed i would like to have the fan running at full speed all the time just to get it cooled to maximum ... will it do when i wire up the +12 and gnd pins of the fan to the 12v permanent out of the power supply and leave the tacho pin of the fan connected to the mainboard ???

[as stated some posts up the ps3 running ok for about an hour with an external cooler]

    thanks
