Why are you booting it into recovery mode, or is it doing it by itself? You can just download the latest firmware update which I believe leaked rather recently and update it from a portable flash drive. Just a thought.

I have PS3 DEBUG/TEST PS3. It is obvious Your hard drive has no PS3 files to run or recognize the Your PS3 TEST system and that why you get black screen and it automatically shut it self off after two minutes.

We know that Your PS3 Test system is over Debug 2.50 Firmware

    1. Get into Recovery mode like what you did

    2. Go to this site and download the PS3 Debug/TEST firmware 3.10 http://www.ps3news.com/PS3-Dev/ps3-debug-firmware-update-3-10-is-now-available-for-test-units/ ( NOT RETAIL PS3 VERSION FIRMWARE)

    3. Make sure you put 3.10 Debug/TEST Firmware on SD Card, Not USB stick, I Repeat NOT USB stick because it is not reliable and could brick your system.

    4. Make sure you have the correct order folder in SD Card like this PS3 > UPDATE and put 3.10 Debug/Test firmware file in the update folder. If it incorrect order, your PS3 TEST system won't recognize it and can't update it.

    5. Put SD card in the SD slot then you should notice orange blinking led light, now select 6. (SYSTEM UPDATE)

    6. Make sure your PS controller already connected in USB wired to your PS3 TEST/ DEBUG system.

I have done this since 2008, Make sure you don't use the USB STICK, I can't stress enough to tell you this. Many report in 2009 that older PS3 Retail and TEST Fats models "only" that bricks the PS3 by using USB stick. USE SD CARD and make sure the folder is in correct order too

Hope this help, enjoy your PS3 TEST system :)

What others have said. Needs firmware update (same as a retail system in a similar situation).

Get the latest debug firmware and update it and you should be in perfect working order. Again, same as you would with a retail.

Nice piece of kit by the way. A lot of those early first gen TEST units are long dead. Good to see one is still alive and kicking. :)

I've followed your instructions exactly. I've downloaded the PS3 Debug / Test Firmware 3.10 (USA) and extracted it into PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP and when I try to update the system it gives mt "The data is corrupted. (8002F2C5)"

    Am I doing something wrong?

Now you have got this somewhere far, Can you tell me more specifically about this corrupted data. Is it already corrupted before you try to install or is it happen to be corrupted during installing along green bar with percent number?

Let take this into further, Is your PS3 system either PAL (Europe) or NTCS (America)

Do you know what the original firmware it been store on you PS3 Test system before it gone?

Are you a new owner of PS3 TEST system?

I was looking elsewhere on the internet and someone suggested holding down the power button for 2 beeps. I did, and this happened.

Brilliant now you got it working. Good news. I never heard that method before.

You are ready to do whatever you like with this system. Make sure you checked the current firmware and remember it.

We have saved alot of time here, Congratulation.

That causes the PS3 to "forget" the video settings and return for analog mode. If it detects HDMI link it will then communicate with the display and perform the setup.

If a PS3 (ANY PS3) is set up for HDMI display, the ANALOG outputs will be *muted* meaning there is no image at all there.

Just so you know, it was not an issue with video settings. It was nothing more than the console being set in a different boot mode which is only possible on Debug consoles. Holding the power button reset it to boot in software mode (XMB). Issue is solved, can this die now?
