I know is not a big cut, but the point is that intead of subsidising all models sony should make a spartan version (with the PS3 essentials and HDMI) and then the deluxe edition with BC, dual HDMI, the whole hub thing that didnt make it in the final, etc...

So the lite would go for $350-$400 and the deluxe for say, $700-$800

I know what you're thinking "who in his right mind would spend 800 bucks in a PS3?" well, posers: the guy that puts 15k in stuff on a 14k civic (instead of buying an accord or a small bimmer) is the same guy who gets a souped up PS3...

    Cant agree more...

OK, some how my point got missed. Cutting BC will mean Sony can cut at most $50 from the price. That means $450 would be the lowest price the 20GB HDD version could retail for without Sony taking a bigger hit. Removing the HDD is not an option - Sony has promised developers it won't do that.

Let's say for argument's sake that they are willing/able(?!) to drop another $50 out of their own pocket - that's $399 for the basic system without BC. Sure it is cheaper, but it's not that much cheaper and still out of the reach of most people still in school (without rich parents). It is also the same price as the premium XB360. So what does that solve, other than to put yet another SKU on the shelves to confuse retailers and consumers?

Having said all that, once the RSX moves to 65nm I think that together with the CELL die shrink and Blu-ray economies of scale (dropping the price of the diodes) they will be able to save enough money to make a price cut in time for Christmas.

One thing just occured to me - Perhaps Sony are partly being forced to keep the PS3 price fairly high to allow manufacturers of early Blu-ray units to make some money before blu-ray goes into real mass production? Rumour mill keeps on grinding!

I only mentioned the HDD disclaimer in this one to prevent it becoming part of the argument in this one! Oh how that backfired!

PS: The PSX was exactly what Shadowlayer describes but for the PS2 platform and it bombed rather badly.

Is not only what the PS2 chip costs alone but all the components that are there just to interact with it, the total space in the mainboard, related manufacturing costs, etc...

If you take all thats somehow releated to BC I think you could save a clean $100 right off.

And what sony says isnt written in gold, so I doubt they wont remove the HDD. In fact they may release a spartan SKU without the HDD to see if people actually buys it.

If it works, then it will stay...

Considering a full PS2 costs $130 new retail, I highly doubt Sony would save $100 from cutting BC alone. In fact, I would bet money on it.

Considering the relatively poor build of the Slim PStwo, and the failing drives of the other retail PS2 units, PS3's half-ass compatibility could really make it hard to re-live or play PS2 titles in 10 years from now.

You should see the sorry state of most Test units. ;)

This is one of the many reasons why I still have an original PS2 NIB. It's only purpose is to serve as a backup unit should the original bite the dust. Though that said, at some point I'll probably try to snag a 75000 series Test unit as I love the size and weight of the slimline. It makes my full size Test look so bulky and overweight.

    It's a pointless exercise but $50.
