Oh how I am dismayed tonight when I went to turn on my 80GB (Backwards compatible from the MGS4 bundle) PS3 to play a little MGO in between watching some stuff on my pc when it does the after mentioned. Blinking Red light of Death! I tried checking all the connectors and plugging it into another socket incase that was the problem. I removed the hard drive and re-inserted it a few times too. All the googling i've done leads to having to send it to Sony to fix for 150$(@#!!##!) or buying some repair guide. Has anyone had this problem and was able to fix it? I can't afford a new ps3 or anything right now. I'm broke.OH:OH: So, it's actually the YLOD. Crap. All of the fixes i've read about lead to using a heat gun to redo the solder on the GPU and CPU. Is it possible to just actually use a soldering Iron and reapply the solder that way? I did the same for my Pioneer Wireless Headphone base a few months back after the Power plug's solder became undone and stopped working. Fixed the issue.
I think Sony dropped the price to fix it, but you could also spend $100 to get it fixed properly by getting the GPU reballed (would need to find someone who does this).
It's the Backwards compatible MGS4 bundle ps3. The 80GB The Gunmetal Grey 40gb one isn't BC. And i've heard that if you send your PS3 in to them you don't even get the same model back , they just send you some Refurb unit. And I guess i'd have to look on Ebay or craigslist to find someone who could reball it eh?(i'd hope they'd use Lead solder instead of Lead free, which doesn't last as long as lead based solder and is stronger right?)
Interesting point hahaha. If anyone has used a Re-balling service in the past that is reliable and uses Lead solder, do please post a link if possible.
