Just downloaded it. Sure, the emulation should have been fixed earlier, but at least it is fixed. Looks better than the PS2 on high resolution TVs, too. So far, I only tried MGS3, but I may try MGS2, FFXII, and some Playstation games later and see how they fare. Edit: Tried MGS2. Looks better then the Xbox version running on Component (Granted, my PS3 is using HDMI).
When I tried to play MGS3 before the update, I used to get white lines in the cutscenes and the game looked very jagged and in a lower looking resolution (It was similar to playing a PS2 with Component cables on a HDTV). After the update, everything is crisper and cleaned up, although there is a little bit of jaggies on my TV (Which is normal, since it is in widescreen)
Well, I no doubt that soon or later a region free disc appears in the market to use our original ps1 and ps2 games of any region in our ps3 (or something less legal, than a loader or something).
..that said, it does intercept and affect processing through a software layer, else the update would not be possible
It's a mix of HW and SW emulation. The PS2 for example has the PS1 chip, but you can use Texture Smooth and Fast Loading options, which means some software emulation is made to use the PS1 chip and add these new features. The PS3 can play PS1 and PS2 games, but if you need to save games you need to create a virtual PS1 or PS2 memory card on the PS3 HDD. So the console must make some kind of "cheating emulation" to make the games recognize the virtual memory card, as they aren't coded to load saves from the HDD. I still think Sony was lazy not adding upscalling and other improvements on PS1 and PS2 games.
It might be added in the future, but I would think that it is not a simple case of flicking a switch when you are dealing with actual hardware, especially since the PS3 does not feature a hardware scaler. I'd prefer them to concentrate on getting the compatibility up there myself
I agree with Taucias on this, although I don't own a PS3,mainly because he lived in Crete. xD are EyeToy based games handled properly?
