I just bought a 22" LED monitor for my Mac. My room is the size of an actual shoe box and I don't have room for a TV. I'd love to get another PS3 after my last one got the YLOD, but when it died I got rid of my TV too. I hear a lot of people saying that a PS3 has some weird issues with resolution when outputting to non-HDMI connections. My monitor supports 1080p (1920 x 1080) and I was wondering if I could get that resolution using an HDMI-DVI adapter from a PS3? Or is there an actual straight VGA/DVI adapter I can get for the PS3. It's a gorgeous monitor with a great display and response time, I'd love to do some console gaming on it. If anybody knows, please help. I'm basing my decision to buy on this compatibility issue. Thanks.
If the HDMI-DVI adapter support HDCP like HDMI then I would imagine it would work. I'm not sure what you mean by weird output issues. But then again I use HDMI. The issues may be related to PS3 not having a built in scaler so it can't run at any resolution you want, all the time, like the Xbox. I suppose that could be an issue somehow mainly if your TV can't do all resolutions through your hookup method, unless you are using 480i/p which I think all software must support.
EDIT. NVM after some research, my monitor doesn't support HDCP input. Does that rule me out completely?
An HDFury HDMI-VGA converter should sort you out. If the monitor doesn't have VGA input, you'll just have to use a VGA-DVI converter. That's assuming that the DVI input supports analogue as well as digital though.
HDCP isn't needed for playing games afaik, only if you watch dvds or blu-rays. I used my PS3 (Slim) with a DVI-HDMI Adapter with both of my Monitors, both support HDCP.
These devices are both very reasonably priced ($40 USD) for hdcp strippers HDMI to VGA http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150734129088 HDMI to HDMI http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270876059421
Bad news pal. I looked into this further. Turns out the manual does mention it. HDCP is mandatory at all times for PS3 to use HDMI. To quote Sony... "If a device that is not compatible with the HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) standard is connected to the system using an HDMI cable, video or audio cannot be output from the system." http://www.playstation.com/manual/pdf/PS3-01-1.0_2.pdf
Yeah, I can confirm that. I once had a little LCD monitor with a DVI input, and it was advertised as having HDCP support. So one day I got an HDMI to DVI cable and hooked it up to my PS3. No signal. Turns out my monitor doesn't support HDCP (even though it says so on the box and even on the unit itself). That kinda turned me off of Samsung for a while. The picture quality wasn't exactly the best around either. (although it did have a SCART input. WHA???) Anyway, you don't need HDCP support to use the component output from a PS3. I believe you can play games that way, but not Blu-rays. I think I read something about Sony changing that, but I don't think it's happened yet.
They did a miserable job advertising it. Buried deep in a book, with no on-screen warning or error...
You get 576i upscaled *I think* by RCA soo.. It wouldn't make much of a difference. Unless there is a converter for his monitor?
If you choose AV Multi/SCART, you can use 480p/576p (NTSC/PAL models) with the VGA adapter, I think it only work with Sync on green compatible monitors though. http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/videooutput.html
Maybe, it'd be interesting to try. I don't see mention of VGA or sync on green. But good luck finding the PS2 vga cable without shelling out for a whole linux kit...
