I bought a PS3 on the cheap but it seems to have disc related issues 80% of the time. Most of the time it recognizes it has a disc in it but doesn't seem to read it, and a good chunk of the time the disc is stuck in the tray. (but goes out with a fan test or in most half of the cases a regular reset). What are some common thing I'd need to check/possible fixes? (I'm completely unfamiliar with the PS3, apart from taking it apart)
Sounds like a lens fault. This is pretty common in PS3's, though you tend to see it more often in the CECHA-CECHG fat models and slim models from CECH-2000 and up. I've seen a few NOR fat models with failed lenses though, so it does happen. You'll need a KES-410A, as most likely, the diode for the BluRay lens has failed. As for the disc getting stuck, it's probably the drive mechanism is a bit sticky. You can test the lens by trying to play a DVD movie. If it works, then it's definitely the lens.
DVD's and regular CD's have the same issue. So it's time to open that sucker up and look if the drive mechanism is as it should or not.
OK, then it might not be the lens after all. I take it the drive that's in it is the original (it's never been replaced)? The possibility could exist that the logic board might have failed, which if it has, you'd need to replace it and remarry it to the console (which would require the unit being on or below 3.55 firmware and you'd need a device to put it into factory service mode). If you put a disc in and it spins at all, it's most likely not an issue with the laser deck or drive mechanism.
I've opened it up and I saw the drive was misaligned, explains why it got stuck. Now that was fixed I tried a dvd again with no apparent issue, but it was just a quick test so might be luck. So I expect that the laser is burned out and the drive misaligned. At the very least I've ordered a new laser and when it arrives I'll see if that fixes it.
I had dvd issues again, but changing lenses fixed all. Looks like the dvd also was close to being burned out.(which isnt that suprising seeing as it came with a dvd in it and a broken controller that only worked on wire)
Wow, they must have been using it alot as a multimedia device. I've heard of the rare occasion of the BluRay lens getting burned out on the 410A lens, but this is the first time I've heard both lenses being burned out on the same time.
