hey my ps3 ylod'd, its my cooler that doesnt work..at all apperantly. anywhore i bought some pc heat sinks and a dremel that im going to put on there so this thing will last, i need an original for my collection so 2 questions:

    1. if i did the hair drier fix work for a while with the pc heatsynks ( there going to be protruding out from the bottom of the case lol )

    2. if the console ylods again after this would the hairdryer fix hinder the possibility of me getting the ps3 reballed in the fiture

also in case you were wondering for my collection i want the launch consoles, i have a fat ps1, fat ps2, this ylod fat ps3, and a ps4 comeing from amazon as a bday preasent from my gf

if i had one i would use a heatgun, but i did a hair dryer fix before where you put the mobo in a box and heat it for 15 minuits

The hairdryer will maybe get the unit back to live for a backup. But will not be a solution.
A prof reball is allways the best solution.

Heatguns are only used by people who lack any forethought as to how bad of an idea it is and why they should do things the right way.

If you have time to reflow every once in awhile, it will stagger along on life support but you will have to start reflowing it more and more often over time.

As long as the core problem (poor quality lead-free solder that's slowly cooking itself) exists, the YLOD will persist.

To answer question 2, yes OP if you do the hair dryer trick and damage another component outside the GPU/CPU (which could happen) a reball would be effectively useless.

Also did you put new thermal paste after opening the console up?

i know it could do damage to other components but i was asking if i could still get it reballed and such later. yes i did put new thermal paste on the board, however for some reason the stock heatsink wont make full contact with either of the chips, i think the console was reballed before i purchassed it and somehow the chips arent sitting flat, also there is flux around the rsx and the cell that i hat to clean.

the console came heavily damaged, the seller said the dvd drive didnt work and it had an overheating problem. i figured that it would need a new drive and a fan cleaning/thermal paste replacement at the most. when i opened it i found these extra issues:
1:) most of the RF shielding had been yellowed from the console being smoked around
2:) anything thats white (the power supply cable that goes from the psu to the mobo, the label on the hdd, etc) had a brown coating
3:) litterally 20% contact between one of the processors and the cooler ( i know becuase the guy spread the thermal thin enough i could see what had touched)
    4:) flux on the mobo
5:) thermal paste that looks like as5 on the motherboard
6:) a few areas on each of the heat spreaders that look like he stabbed at the chips with a screwdriver fairly hard ( litterally hundreds of little dents )

    so my plans are too:
1:) install a new disk drive
2:) buff the heat spreaders so there flat again ( dremel coming from amazon soom )
3:) install a few coolermaster heatsinks
    4:) add ram heatsinks
    5:) install a 500gb hdd
6:) possibly get the system reballed with leaded solder

edit: i forgot, for some reason the power button works to turn the console on but it wont turn it off, i need to turn if off from the xmb. no clue why

Yeah get it reballed if you can. A lot of shops don't reball due to time and ability to do. I don't know anyone else other than myself who reballs in my area (plenty of professional heat gunners though!)

    This is what you want:
