Hey all. After installing PSBBN on my ps2, I wanted to experiment with the built in video playback functions, living in a PAL territory meant none of my regions movies will work with PSBBN's movie player, and all the tools needed to convert files for playback were old, defunct or just lacked compatibility. So i set about putting a little kit together with all the tools needed to convert my own personal DVDs to pss/psm format. You will need to rip YOUR OWN DVDs to VOB files (Other formats may work.. not tried yet) You will need a PS2 and PSBBN... duh! you will need a USB stick or ftp setup to transfer movies and files.. and uLE for file handling etc. Everything else is in the kit. I have tried an NTSC file and several small PAL files i converted with the kit, playback is pretty good... All the programs are freeware. https://mega.co.nz/#!cdNAXTaB!OUUBAlhVgC776Xp6ZIOa3DGI-Cw6cVjPhk0KuUR3F70
Hi! Sounds cool, but the really interesting facts are missing. Bitrates and formats for example... Rgds.
To my mind much more simpler is to use MeGui for creating m2v file. Or xvid4psp6. Or xvid4psp5. Cause you can create m2v from ANY type of file (not only vobs). All programs are free. As for limitation specs: the same as from official sony documentation: 720x576 - resolution, bitrate - probably unlimited (I tested 9000kbps). I dont know about sound and subtitle limitation. I prefer SMS cause it allow more then 720x576 resolution
how you transfer the movies over to the ps2 so that psbbn accespts them? i tyink you need to edit the database for the movies. the way i did it was hacking one of the ps-bbn channels to allow movies downloads. if your method is easier it's worth a look i guess.
Ok, well i didn't want to over complicate things with bit rates and formats, A vob file from a dvd is just an MPEG2 file that conforms (more or less) to PSBBN movie player requirements. I admit others may want to transcode different formats, but I wanted to keep it simple...(for me!) and find a good way of transcoding PAL to NTSC too. As for the programs mentioned like meGui etc, i will give them a go thanks! As for file transfers richi902, I have included with the download the file layout of the contents/contents folder on the hdd0.. It's got one entry in the database called msg.psm, and the corresponding super long named folder. If you paste these to YOUR hdd and add YOUR .psm file named msg.psm, it should work fine.. It even correctly sees the different file size of the new movie.. Once this is done boot into PSBBN and copy/duplicate the folder you just made, then rename it. You can then add another msg.psd file to the original folder without editing the database files directly.. and rinse and repeat..
PSBBN Video Convert Guide I'm ready to provide guide for converting any video into PSS. 1) You have to download latest revision of Xvid4PSP v5 from official site https://code.google.com/p/xvid4psp/downloads/list When guide was written latest version was XviD4PSP 5.10.330.0 (2013-03-21) View attachment PSS_XVID4PSP5_02.ZIP RC33.1 2) Install it (full installation), configure language and folder for temporary files and CLOSE it. 3) Download this archive, and copy folder presets into xvid4psp installation folder. View attachment PSS_XVID4PSP5_02.ZIP 4) Add values from xvid.reg file into registry (just double click it). 5) Launch Xvid4PSP. Open video file you need. Be care PS2BBN supports only one audio track. 6) In fact all of this have to been set by xvid.reg - you can go to the next step. Select Format: MPEG PS Select Audio Encoding: PCM 16bit In Video Encoding you can select whatever you want. I prefer MPEG2 HQ2 Ultra. You don't have to care about bitrates and so on. 7) In fact all of this have to been set by xvid.reg - you can go to the next step. Now you probably have to fix fps. Go to Video->Interlace/Framerate. If in tab Main Input Framerate is not equal to 29.970fps or 30.000fps you have to set Framerate Converter to ConvertFPS. If your input video already has normal fps (29.97 or 30) you don't have to change here anything. Unfortunately I have no idea how to set it automatically in this program. But this is the only step which you have to set up. 8) Thats all here. Of course you can change such optional settings as filtering, color correction, bitrate, start and end of file and so on. But in most cases it is already done in input video. So you have to press encode and select output folder. 9) After long encoding in output folder you've got 2 BIG files: *.m2v and *.wav. You can close xvid4psp. 10) Now copy 3 files into folder ps2str: ps2strw.exe, ps2str.exe and encvag.dll. You can get them from official sony ps2sdk. 11) Now take *.m2v and *.wav files which you get on step 9 and copy them into folder ps2str with names test.m2v and test.wav. 12) Run as administrator ps2str.cmd. After processing you will get working test.pss Some words about limitations. Almost all limitations is posted here. http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?37923-PSS-Converter&p=568965&viewfull=1 Maximum resolution 720x576, only one audio type is supported. No subtitles. These limitation already included into xvid4psp settings. I also included autocrop into main settings. There is also fps limitation. It is also included into reg file. Bitrate probably unlimited.
Change my guide a bit. Now you don't have to convert fps - it will be done automatically. So you can just drag and drop file and don't care about it format.
Thanks AKuHAK for work on this and PSBBN, I'm loving it. Has anyone had trouble with PS2STR encoding the audio? I have had to re-encode my .WAV's to 44000 instead of 48000? Seems fine after this though..
Next step of my guide. 1) First of all you need to get my latest "build" of PS2 BB Navigator. Google - "theisozone psbbn custom akuhak". Be careful - in comments there is newest version. 2) If you are using windows you have to download putty. If linux you have to setup ssh@ssl (google it). 3) Your computer name have to contain only latin characters. If no - please rename your pc. 4) You have to create user with any non-empty password using only latin characters (or use existing one). It is better to set password never expires. 5) You have to choose any folder with latin name and place there prepared test.pss 6) Right-click on this folder -> Share -> Sharing -> add you user from step4 with permission on reading (and maybe on writing too) 7) Launch BB Nav, go to Internet Channel -> Test Connection -> and take down the IP address. 8) Open on PC putty, type IP address and press enter 9) login name: bn, password: bn 10) paste there such a command and press enter: sudo mount -t smbfs -o ro,username=ps2 //ps2-pc/PS2SMB /mnt/smb3 Type password. You have to change username, and share name (green - pc name, blue - folder name). Thats all on PC side. 11) Return to BB Nav - go to Game Channel -> Test Channel -> Video section -> 4th video (first in the second row) 12) Click "O" and just download video. It will reach enormous speed (in my test about 1.1Mbit/s) Thats all I use this video for test And I prepared video to show you that it is very easy:
