Gee, I remember when Sony just had to remove the backwards compatibility to save money, and software BC would definitely not be possible. But thanks anyway for giving me the opportunity to pay for the privilege of playing games I own.

While it may look like a PS2 game, there is no reason that what they are selling is actually a PS2 game in an emulator.

Backward compatibility using original discs is a completely different matter.

I think that the PS2 games are re-compiles for the ps3 and the ps1 ones are just emulated since it's easy...

Save money was a lame excuse. They wanted to curb the used discs market and now that the said market is dying out, there's no better time to go full power and re-release the games in a format that prevents you fom re-selling them as used.

    GENIUS !

And while they're at it, they're hunting down any homebrewn apps authors that make tools which could allow these games to be played on "jailbroken" PS3s ...

rebuy!? Fuck that, you can get a PSTwo for about $20. Most games you can find for the same price they are release on the PSN store, sorry but having to rebuy the same game JUST to use it on the next one is robbing loyal customers blind.

This is exactly why I nearly force my friends to keep their old consoles if they're working, cause nearly everyone I know have bought the consoles again cause they say they miss them.

i suspect the PS4 will be incompatible with PS3 games and they will release PS3 games on PSN mid way through the PS4 life

Lets be realistic. I do have a BC PS3 (still, not sure how much longer). I'm actually kind of excited about this for many reasons
    1. There is not a chance in hell my PS3 runs Import PS2 games due to Region Lock. Yet this doesn't apply to digital titles (I have digital euro ps2 games on my ps3).
    2. The titles that interest me the most, Sega Ages, are actually far cheaper then buying a disc version (when you factor shipping, Yen->USD and proxy fees, or even on ebay they go for > $30->$60+)
    3. PS2 Emulation on PS3 is not a walk in the park. Even though my PS3 has HW the digital versions still run in emulation and they heat up my PS3 faster then any retail game.
    4. Nobody is forcing you to rebuy these digitally. If you really wanted to still play PS2 games the better option is buying a Slim Ps2 that can be moded for VGA output. It's cheaper and gives better results. I'm close to doing this my self since I don't think my PS3 will survive much longer.

Seriously this is straight up retarded. It was 100% a price cutting measure as they went from full hw to partial to none. People didn't want $600 PS3. Your Idea makes no sense at all.
If you really want to rag on someone, what's nintendo's excuse for stripping out GCN support from the revised Wii models. Sure there might enough old wii out there but why the need in the first place.

I think it's been somewhat said/rumored PS4 won't be BC. It probably will be made BC for PS1 & PS2 via Digital. Really I wish sony would make the PS4 with an expansion slot and let us by add on modules to put in PS3 support (or PS2 support if they don't have a complete emulator still) . I'd be more then willing to shoulder the cost to add in compatibility.

Cost was definitely an issue, I think there's no denying that. But if they had no intention of ripping people off in the future, why did they remove compatibility entirely? Hacked slim PS3s can still play PS2 games (I believe in the same way non 60GB emulates PS2); the capability is still there, they just don't want you to use it.

Also the Nintendo Wii removing GameCube compatibility annoyed me as well. Not so much because because of it's removal, but because it was the same exact price as the previous model that played GameCube games. Funny how the Wii U won't play GameCube games despite being backwards compatible with Wii games, but Nintendo will happily let us download digital GameCube games instead. They're planning what Sony is already doing.

Your claim of it being retarded would be valid a few years ago. Now that we discovered they could make all PS3s reverse compatible if they wished to as early as 2008, it does not sound so retarded, eh ? They won't disable old consoles from playing PS2 titles only because it would rage the players and bring them legal issues.

They're abusing their position as maintainers of a platform and their business model might suffer in result from that abuse if us, the "idiots" (consumers) who buy their stuff wake up and cease putting our money on their company.

I am criticizing people you might deal in a frequent basis with (SCEA people) and in a sense they're work buddies for you. I completely understand your position as you are a developer.

A few years ago I was in favor of digital only distribution but now I am not very happy with it. I really dislike the way this stuff is going like. And wow the ones who went criticizing early were right, sadly.

It wouldn't surprise me if they release the PS4 and say something like "Due to the technichal differences between this and previous PS consoles, you will have to rebuy all your already owned digital downloads"... and guess what? Many people will still rebuy them. That's what's sad: consumers who abide by company's rules, even if they're getting screwed by the latter.

It's stupid that we have to pay to play something we already own on a system that you can physically stuff the game disc into(When the system itself used to be BC. And still is through software emulation that they are keeping to themselves to charge you per game). It'd be a different story if it was impossible to put the games in the system. ALA the Wii/VC.

PS2 classics point to the fact that there is some sort of PS2 software emulator,(Because they aren't ports obviously). So why can't we use it with out own games and essentially test/debug games for them so they can work on compatibility? Money. Good luck seeing obscure games that will never get licensed on the service. (Same region as your games. Not imports)
We can use the PS3 PS1 software emulator.. so why not this?

    Yes, that's why I am so disgruntled with SONY right now. It's been months I don't even bother powering my PS3 on. -_-;

Seeing what's out (classics) on SNE/PSN would just make me feel like a fool, because I'll have some of the discs and will not be able to use them with my PS3.
Knowing that the Slim PS3 can read the discs "no problemo" and the limitation is imposed intentionally through programming is what turn me off.

This smells almost exactly like the UMD Passport program! You pay to rebuy the games which you had previously bought and owned... even if the games cost over a hundred dollars each for no clear reason.

But I doubt that it will stink as much as the UMD passport program as the PS2 isn't connected to the PSN and they will not check whether you own an original copy of the disc.

I just hate this idea that if you bought a digital copy of the PSP game, it costs you nothing to play it on the PSVita.... but if you own the UMD version, you pay to achieve the same thing.

sony is just reselling the games...

bullshit, if people already bought the game on disc, why cant they let them play it on the ps3 then? the game is working with the just software. and its already on the ps3(hackers found it in the system files)

The GC support is still there... its just missing the physical ports (the space is still on the PCB though!). You can add GC support back to the new wiis with a soldering iron.
