N00b here. Please help me get started or point me in the right direction.

Trying to restore an old PSone. Drive won't read discs properly. Overall console condition is good. CD mechanism seems to work OK. So I suspect the laser is dead.

Are the drives easy to replace? Should I replace the whole drive, or just the laser? Is the drive some kinda standard and can I harvest spare parts from any optical drive?

You don't just replace the laser diode, it's the whole block. You need a specific model - KSM-440BAM, I think. Just get one off eBay.

    It's extremely easy to replace.
