PSone Shmups and RPGs

Discussion in 'Rare and Obscure Gaming' started by SuperFunkNinjaYoshiiKun, Dec 2, 2004.

  1. Normally, I'd ask this in the Shmups! forum, but it's down atm. Gamespy suck...

Anyhow, I've been thinking about an ikkle PSone and the shooters available. It seems that most shmups got a Saturn and PSone conversion, with the Saturn version usually the superior version. However, what I'm wondering is, how many PSone shooters are better than the Saturn version and what quality PSone exclusive shooters are there?

The PSone also seems to be the machine to go for if you like RPGs. Which I am partial too. Any recommendations?

I was thinking about getting a SuperFami (again), maybe the new Jr version. But the RPGs on the SF (US versions) are damn expensive now. And Gamestation have mint condition unboxed PSones with 2 games for the daft price of £25! Get me a Onechip and off we go.

I doubt really that any are "better" on Saturn, the only advantage I see is that Saturn has Battle Garrega, for instance DoDonPachi is better on PSOne.

    Some PSOne picks :

Raystorm (ok its on Saturn as Layer Section II but crapper)
    RayCrisis
    Gaia Seed
    Raiden Project & DX

I bought "Mobile Light Force" the other day. It's nothing great, but it's not bad for $1.50. I'm not sure if this game's on the Saturn, though.

Einherder (sp is wrong) is good. Most people would probably say I was wrong, but it was good.

Pick up Gekioh! Shooting King. It's like $10, and worth every penny. It ain't the best shooter ever, but for that price you can't go wrong. It's pretty easy--I was amazing at it, and I suck balls at shooters as I never play 'em.

Go to http://www.shmups.com forums. There you can get a lot of information about psone an saturn versions of shoot'em ups.

Edit: sorry, I didn't read you knew that forum ;)

  7. Tis down atm.

Anyhow, do I really need to disassemble yet another console? Is there no boot disk for the PSone yet? Or am I gonna have to get a Onechip. All I want to do is play imports. cheaply.

    Google is my friend.....
    Seems there's 2 -

There's quite a few that are better on one, but not the other. For example:

Donpachi & DoDonpachi are both superior on the PS
Soukyugurentai is better on the Saturn

Then you've got exclusives and whatnot. Just wait for Shmups to come back up... this topich as been done to death over there. :)

  10. I was gonna mention Einhander as well...

Mobile Light Force is definately worth picking up, just don't let the creepy Charlie's Angels cover throw you. I think it was released on the Saturn as Gunbird?

Also good are Raiden DX and Raiden Project, R-Type Delta and G-Darius. I also have Strikers 1945 - I know it has a Saturn conversion, but it doesn't play badly at all on the PSX.

  11. Mobile Light Force = Gunbird - the story which made Gunbird awesome rather than just pretty good

MLF is Gunbird. Also, the PSX version has the galleries and videos from the Saturn game. You just need software to get to that stuff.

    I also own/recommend:

    Gekioh (Shienryu)
    Raiden Project
    Philosoma
Jupiter Strike (more like a rail shooter)
    R-Type Delta
    R-Types
    Xevious 3DG
I own all of these except for R-Type Delta.

    Some of my recommendations:

G-Darius: cool new take on an old series
RayCrisis: r0x0rz! Oh why did I have to lose my disc :smt009
Einhander: a very good one imho, from Square (oddly)

Stuff I've played on Saturn but (probably) exists on PS1:
Soukyugurentai: looks cool and plays very well :)
Dodonpachi: for your way-over-the-top mega laser action
Parodius Deluxe: wickedly odd shmup, too weird to explain

  14. Yeah, a lot of the games you mention I have the Saturn version of. Saturn Souky is quality. But I have been looking at some of the PSone exclusives.

R-Types and Delta are a must. But it's some of the Japanese only games that interest me. Harmful Park, Kyuin, Gaia Seed, Geki-Oh etc. Found that there's quite a few quality 2D japanese games. Never thought I'd get a PSone, but it looks like I'm getting it tomorrow. Oh and there's Strider as well, cool.

I downloaded RayCrisis for the PC from The Underdogs. I am going to have to get this for the PSX, it's quite fun. Having a job kicks large amounts of ass (especially since I don't have any bills to pay).

The PC version of RayCrisis looks pretty good (despite the fact that there's no texture filtering), but they didn't do a great job on the port itself. The configuration menu actually maps keys to the original PSX keys (X,O, L1, R1, etc)! There's also no "Exit" option on the main menu, forcing you to use Control-Alt-Delete to quit out of it.
