What sort of protections were put on this game? I've never heard anything about it before.

I dunno, MAG'94 did the cracking, I can tell for sure that at least 5 bin files were modified more or less in order to selfboot and allow schthack servers compatibility without code breaker; and that it took a great DC hacker about 2 months to figure out how to crack it (working part-time of course).

From what I remember it tied itself to your Dreamcast unit. I just remember people getting screwed buying used ones and trying to play online.

Well that's a protection meant to avoid cheating and account hijacks, and probably simply a design flaw of the game that turned out as a mere protection, it can easily be bypassed with softwares that "clean" the flash memory or write into it.

The copy protection avoiding the BACKUPS to be bootable is way more complicated, and required a file hacked so much that it almost doubled in size.

It took a great DC hacker a whole lot of time to figure it out, a whole whole lot of time.

Right, I recall a friend borrowing my PSOv2 and then buying his own and having issues. First disk I bought didn't have a sticker for the key either, damn was I pissed.

No no no. Your PSO account ties itself to the serial number with the game.

The PAL version is harder to crack because the software checks itself numerous times to make sure the code has not been altered. Every time the disc is accessed it runs a check routine on RAM. This was a last attempt to stop code breaker/gameshark bastards from NOL-ing people.

A repack has been made, with FastLoad (faster laodings, cause of better sort order) and better movies. Also almost every bugs seems to be avoidable when burning at super-slow speed (1x).

I updated my 1st post to be accurate with new release.

Please keep my implication with this release private. Ain't that the spirit of the 0th bit anyway?

    I hope you'll like it :p

Is this version still tied to the SEGA HL server?

NOLing was a Gameshark/Codebreaker code that when activated caused your PSO character to be overwritten with a character called NOL, who was level 5 or something. At first they could only get you during a mission, but then it was extended to the lobby. It was basically the final straw for the DC PSO community, at the time.

Imagine playing for hundreds of hours grinding up your level and getting neat gear, only to have some kid with a GS NOL you. Damn those mofos.

From what I remember, if you took out your memory card your file wouldn't get overwritten or something. That was so damn annoying though. The thing I always had happen was the fucking shit where they reboot your DC.

Early on there was a chance if you pulled the card out as soon as the NOL was initiated that it might save your character, but the details were hazy as it could potentially corrupt your save. Later, they combined it with a zone boot that would write to your memory card. I guess because it would kick you out of the lobby and the game updated your save automatically.

There was some pretty clever codes made, but they were almost all malicious.

Others included making items that when equipped dropped your character to below 0 health and killed them over and over.

Sega got wise to modified weapons and armor and changed the server code to ban people with weapons that were not unlocked on the server (some weapons never got released officially within the game) or had illegal stats. So you'd get kids running around dropping banned items and normal folks would pick them up then get banned.

There were codes that would allow spells to hit player characters and kill them.

    There were crash codes.

There were codes that would let people gate crash private passworded games (only way to stop it was to get a full group).

It was the wild west after onlya few months. Very sad.

Reminds me of Diablo 1 online. I don't think I've ever known an online game as farcical as that.

I wish there was a MMORPG that would not allow anyone under the age of 18 to play. I don't want crude/lewd content. I just want to play online without a bunch of kids.

I have obtained the PC version of PSO V2. Happy times! I may even try to go online with it on Schthack's server.

If anyone here wants to play some time, let me know. Maybe we can work something out.

The problem with this and Xbox Live and whatever isn't kids anymore....because guess what? All those dickheads who we played with back when PSO was around didn't just die or anything. There now our age. Kid's aren't even a problem, it's always because my age, 18-20-whatever. They grew up too, at least physically. I can gaurantee you that if there was a game only 18+ and up it would be just as bad. :crying:

I set up my own PC PSO server tonight and my wife and I played together over the LAN. It's great! The functionality is pretty impressive. You can even set up the special quests and holiday events. If there is an interest here, I could open the server to stage games, or if someone wants to know how to make their own then let me know.

Very fun stuff, we did this a few years ago, always fun. Might do it again sometime. Wish I had the Gamecube version, or that the Xbox version worked.

Why not just get the PSO BB version if you're playing on the PC? New weapons, levels, quests, etc. Fun stuff, but I think I've FINALLY said goodbye to PSO. I have all my GC characters in case I ever feel like going back.
