I have a PSP 1001 (phat) that I'd like to install CFW so I can run some emulators. The process seems simple enough - I've updated to OFW 6.60 and then run the CFW Update for the PRO C fix 3. However after the console restarts none of the buttons respond. I have to reboot it, which puts it back to the OFW. I've had a google but can't find any solutions, has anybody come across this or have any suggestions?
I'm not sure about previous issues, I think it was bought from ebay. There's a security sticker behind the battery that someone's stuck on (and now reads void). So it looks like it's been opened up at some point.
I would recommend reinstalling OFW and trying it again from scratch using a pandora battery (puts PSP in service mode), but I'm going to assume you don't have one handy. http://www.dx.com/p/psp-unbricker-pandora-battery-for-psp-1000-2000-1800mah-3-6v-12472#.VSH6O-GTo_4 Try using a downgrader (such as Chronoswitch) to allow you to reinstall 6.60 OFW and try again. Edit: Doubt it's the memory card honestly, but doing a format using the PSP couldn't hurt either and try again. Avoid SD-to-Memory Stick Pro Duo adapters for this.
Check if the SELECT button is working properly. I had one console that did that - it'll get stuck whenever a CFW is used, but it turned out that the SELECT button was faulty and caused the CFW to wait for it to be released (the VSH menu will appear after that).
Tried a couple of different firmwares but all doing the same thing, console just freezes after booting up with only the volume buttons working. I have to hold the Home button when starting to get back to the OFW. I think you're right and it may be hardware related. I've seen the VSH menu pop up a couple of times when restarting, and can't choose anything there either. When I go to the system option to change the nickname, the character sets just spin endlessly and I can't choose anything. Also when in a game and pressing the home button, I can't move between the yes/no option to quit without first sliding to lock then unlock. I might try the pandora/magic stick thing to install 5.00 M33. I think I can softmod the battery to Pandora, just need to get my hands on another memory stick.
There's no reason to stay with 5.00 M33 anymore. :/ It's too old and requires a lot of extra fixes to make it relevant for new games. The new CFWs are not too bad either, plus they will allow you to go onto the PSN. Not to mention that 5.00 M33 will most likely give you the same problem too. I've been there and done that, thinking that 5.50GEN-D3 was the cause at that time. The easiest way to prove whether the button strip is faulty, is to just disconnect it from the mainboard. If the console can boot up and the buttons are operational without it connected, then your button strip is probably faulty (unless some defect in the faceplace is causing the SELECT button to be depressed). But before that, you could try to rub the button with your finger, just in case it was just stiff and just needed to be loosened up (My home button is now like that).
Not to mention the PSP-1000 has horrible housing around that area. If it's been opened before, most likely it's had it's faceplate replaced.
Looks like I'll have to open it up and have a look. Bizarrely it's now getting a bit further than before, I can navigate around the OS and see it's booting the 6.60 ME-2.2 CFW (the last one I put on). But whenever I load an application it just freezes up again. Ok I've just opened it up and removed the button strip, and it powers on fine and I can navigate around. In fact I can navigate around the apps now too without it freezing. Should i order up a replacement circuit strip?
Yea, you should. Unless it works with the faceplate removed, which means that the faceplate has a defect.
The stuck buttons on CFW are indeed caused by select being held down. I've been repairing PSPs since 2006 and when CFWs started to have that silly XMB menu the select problem became a problem (because almost nothing uses it if it breaks you're very likely to not even notice). Unfortunately some people have "wet hands" from sweating and that does enter the unit through the buttons. That cause the strip of flexible contacts to short down. Only definitive fix is replace the bar with the face buttons (the buttons under the LCD screen).
Received the replacement circuit strip today and everything is working perfectly. No more freezing or crazy spinning character sets. Thanks for all your help guys :-D
