I picked up a PSP 2001(star wars model) at the local pawn for $25 because it has/d a bad battery.

I'm using a "fat" psp battery in it now, everything works except when I try to load a UMD.

The game logo will pop up on the home screen.
When I load the game, the sony logo/etc pops up.
After the sony logo the screen turns black.
    nothing...

The only umd I have right now is "need for speed underground rivals" I will try others tomorrow...

    downloaded demos work fine.

Do you hear the UMD mechanism trying to read the disc?
Does the disc look dirty or scratched?

Yes, I can here it trying to read the disk, but it makes a 'grinding' noise every 10-15 sec.

    no custom firmware yet...

EDIT: the 'grinding' noise is just the laser moving.

Disk spins, laser turns on/moves. Possible bad UMD? there are a few scratches/etc...

It could be dirt in it as HeXiGON says; however my PSP has always made kind of a grinding noise when reading UMDs (I bought it new), so it could be something else.
I'd say you try with another UMD disc, else try cleaning the lens with isopropyl alcohol and/or compressed air (or whatever it is called).
