hey guys, how are you doing?

i got a cheap 1003 psp yesterday but it came with a problem. the dpad's left button seemed to be stuck causing the xmb to go all the way left. i tried a game and indeed, it moves by itself.

i disassembled the psp to check the dpad and it was ok. i went further and unplugged the flat cable from the board and IT STILL MOVES LEFT! :|

    WTH is happening?

i managed to find its jailbroken with 5.50 gen, since i can access the recovery menu. the dpad works there (up and down at least) but it still moves left automatically.

any inputs? does it sound like a faulty mobo or cfw?

    thanks again

i would try too update it too any other cfw.
easy too do, and maby it fixes it.

other wise its a hardware failure.

did you clean the inputs with some high% alcohol?

Why people think all hardware proble m can be fixed by upgrading cfw?
You can update forever, but if you have hw problem it don't magically fixes itself.
First check your flat cable connector.

    geez, calm down buddy.

while i think it might be a hw problem, i cant rule out a sw problem since it has no visible damage on the flat cable, etc.

hey fate, you are here too! thanks a ton, i will get back at home today and will test hellcats'.

I took my PSP-1006 console apart for cleaning, since it wouldn't power up. The console treats the buttons as being unpressed when the ribbon flex is disconnected.

Perhaps something is shorting the connections in the connector? If I touched the legs near that connector towards top of the board with a metal screwdriver, it acts like I pressed the LEFT button.

As for 5.50 GEN, editing the flash0:/vsh/etc/version.txt to have the original version number will allow you to upgrade to a 6.60 CFW. Just FYI in case you don't know about it: If you save with 5.50 GEN-D3, your saves may be unreadable on any other firmware due to a bug in 5.50 GEN-D3.

Sure it is the d-pad and not the thumbstick? Have had to replace a thumbstick a while ago in a psp phat due to the same (sounding) issue.

The thumbstick doesn't seem to affect the XMB, except when viewing pictures or in the web browser.

Just to add on because this might be a similar case: I took apart my PSP-2006 console yesterday as well, since the power LED was always lit up orange (even when the AC adaptor isn't connected) when the console is switched on. It turns out that there was some corrosion on the legs of the ribbon flex connector, and scrapping off the corrosion restored the power LED's normal behavior.

Simple really, Its best to try the least likely option first :3

Is it the hardware messing up? Most likely but why not get software out of the equation first. Just to be sure

Also GEN is terrible and no one should have to endure its smelly ways!

Because it smells of hw problems miles away :p
Gen is terrible, but at 100% it doesen't causes issues likes that.
BTW also the update solution it's useless because updating you don't fix corrupt idstorage key, if you have any.
Good luck. On the other "big psp site" there's a ton of topic like this(for example: home button stuck, analog fixed with one direction ecc ecc) with the same answer. Guess the result?
One of the last about an lcd issue an answer make me lol so much XD

Yea I know but while I can't speak for the others I don't know anything about the hardware so I go with what I do know
if it fixes it then good and if it doesn't then there is nothing I can do but hey at least I tried ^__^

BTW we are mostly software folk over there so thats one reason you will mainly see such responses

I got a cheap PSP 1003 model a while back, and similar issue with d-pad and also one of the shoulder buttons; opened up the unit, removed the controls and gave them a clean in a cloth, gently rubbed the contacts they work on; ie removing dust and debris; worked great after that. Probably just dirt and grime issue.
