Man I wasnt really on the new slim, specially that ugly/cheap silver color, but after looking at this video of both systems with FF:CC there's no doubt that buying the old one instead of the slim would be a dumb thing to do, even if you get the fatty for less money... The loading time on the slim is like 1/10 of the old one, it loads the game instantlyh:
Yep, but we got to admit that FFCC is a new game and thus may be coded to take advantage of the slim's extra RAM. Older games may have barely faster loading times...
Games cant use the extra ram PERIOD. They can optimsie what files can be loaded via cache and not. So they can optimise how their stuff loads via the cache system but other then that they can't use the extra ram at all (it's locked in kernal mode).
Duh, Cache system. Where else is it going to store cache data from the umd? It's also probably used for a few other things (maybe video out). Either way it's all in kernal mode so it's not allocatable by games.
The RAM is there as a UMD reading cache or something which means if you game loads data a certain way it goes faster. If you game loads a certain way though it won't help much. I would guess it helps most when loading fairly large chunks of data opposed to lots of tiny pieces. But I don't really know. All I do know is it makes a noticable difference. The extra RAM though is something many people want to tap for homebrew. It would certainly help for N64 emulation, CPS2 and NeoGeo.
You're making no sense. You were asking why there is an extra 32MB of ram for, that ram is primarly there for cache system. It probably will be used by the xmb for future items (like maybe custom mp3 playlist while in game). Games don't have access to kernal memory (truthfuly, atm games only have access to 24mb of main ram, the remaining 8 is kernal memory). for homebrew, they will find a way to hack around and use the extra ram, but for comercial games, they can't use it dirrectly period.
I meant the cache from the very beginning, I don't know what did you understand... And BTW sony said some older games may not load faster, not me.
That video does show a pretty big difference in loading times for sure... Slim may sound like a fresh start in the PSP section for me!
Your post made it sound like ff7cc was making use of the extra ram which is false. It's just optimised to take better use of the cache system. Other then a few flags to explicity state a file is to bypass the cache syste, a game has no way of knowning what psp it's on. I do realise and know older games might or might not have an impact. It's dependant on how they are loaded. (games with a single big file will probably see the lease benifit).
