    Tl;dr? check the 2nd post...

I hope this is the right section to post this.

    So, here's the situation:
    System: PS2 SCPH-79001 with Magic Switch v4.

Since I like to take good care of my original discs, I use a backup whenver possible.
I bought my PS2 brand new with no mod-chip, since I don't trust people that install mod-chips in my country (I've seen many consoles going back to the "retailer" due to bad chip installation).
In order to be able to play my backups, the only solution was/is to either use Swap Magic or ESR.

I installed Free MCBoot 1.8c in my original 8MB MC. I tested ESR and it worked just fine, I was able to play a game that way.
In order to reduce the stress put to the lens, I prefer not to use Swap Magic or other swap method, unless really necessary. With this in mind, I decided to try booting Swap Magic from my Memory Card (Original 8MB) and from a USB flash drive: I read several websites on how to do it, and decided to give it a go... it didn't work. Once I swap the original disc with the backup (original with higher TOC), sometimes I get a black screen, sometimes the console restarts.
I tried both with 3.6+ and 3.8 versions.

I then decided to try other "apps" that would do the same, I tried both from a USB flash drive and from the Memory Card:
-CogSwapLoader 1.0: Once I swap and hit X, it reads the backup but does nothing (it stays in the main CogSwapLoader screen).
-CDLoader and DVDLoader: sometimes I get a black screen, sometimes the console restarts.

In order to make sure the issue was not with the Magic Switch or the way I swapped, I tried Breaker Pro with some PS1 games and I was able to do the swap and the games worked just fine (both with backups and imports).

Additionaly, I tried to run Codebreaker from the MC as well:
-Codebreaker 10.1: It takes ages (10 mins aprox) to load the splash screen and there it stays forever. (Codebreaker 10 seems to work fine though)

I've been searching the net for a couple of days for information on this, and only found some people with similar issues with models SCPH-7XXXX and SCPH-9XXXX, but no one provided workarounds or troubleshooting.
I saw several videos where this works, but my guess is that it's in older revisions of the PS2 slim.

Honestly, I don't really care if it's not possible to do what I want (I'm not asking you guys for a workaround, fix or solution); however I'm really intrigued as to the root cause for this...

Does anyone have additional information on why does this happen?
Are these apps being blocked specifically by the latest PS2 models?
Or do these depend on something (ie. lib, driver, etc) that was removed/modified in these new revisions?
Anyone with the same model I have that has tried/can try this and provide their results?
    Any other thought?

    Thanks in advance.

PS: I'm only using this with backups from my original games. I admit though that I do not own the Swap Magic and Codebreaker, but borrowed them from a friend who does.

I was finally able to get Swap Magic 3.8 (Coder) and CogSwapLoader... I was not doing a TOC refresh... or not doing it right.

The question still stands: what did Sony change in the newer models/series that makes applications such as Swap Magic 3.6 Plus, Codebreaker 10.1, CD Loader, DVD Loader not work? (either black screen or console restarts)
I have yet to try these from a CD, since the idea was to get them working directly from the memory card... maybe I'll try the disc versions...

They redesigned the IOP and all related components as they removed the HDD support completely so they would have less transistors required on the big chip design.

Because that resulted on a simplified IOP peripheral set most homebrewn apps which used PS2SDK relied on certain hardware and software behaviors which no longer apply to the 7900x design. Hence the issues you're seeing.

Also SOME of the issues were intentionally introduced by SONY of course. It even ended breaking up some of the earlier PS2 games and reduced a bit the number of PS1 games which worked on the PS1 emulator.
