    G'day
I bought a PSX DESR 5000/5100 (cant remember which atm)
from japan a while back, and i finally got to replacing the 110v PSU with a 220v one,
so i plugged it in for a test and I get the white noise screen.
and then after twenty seconds it goes to the home menu.
This is where my problem starts:
i cannot seem to navigate the home menu.
I have tried using a dualshock one controller
and also the buttons on the main console.
however it seems stuck, sometimes i can get it to move up and down on what i believe to be the tv tuner category (using the buttons on the unit), but no other button seems to have any effect.
    Extra info:
I've disassembled the psx and checked all the tacts with a multimeter, all good.
From a quick glance all traces/pcb quality seems excellent.
the home menu has a blue swirling ball in the top right hand corner.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i know nothing about psx's so can't really help much, but i do know that the swirling ball is the loading icon so it would seem your unit is stuck trying to load something..

maybe the HDD is corrupted or gone bad alltogether ?

Instead of scanning it with linux, boot some DOS disk and use the manufacturer diagnosis tool. See if it fails S.M.A.R.T. tests.

You would of rather off buying a step up converter from 110~VAC to 220~VAC.

Apart form all that, did the seller say it worked?

If so, then it must not be getting enough amps or something like that to do with the PSU. White noise would indicate low amps I reckon. I'm wrong for sure though, haha.

I don't know anything about PSX's (yet) but I would imaging the hardware would be between a PS2 and a PS3.

connecting to windows via a usb pulls up 160gb of unallocated space, not surprising.
doing a long generic scan with seatols, repairing the bad sectors. S.M.A.R.T Failed.
anyone ever found out how these hdd's are set up inside of the psx?

    Dunno.

Can't you format it, and then the PSX will format it after as it will detect an unknown format?

You can always try another HDD...

Uh, I tried to do the same thing with my Foxtel box. It saved all the data on the HDD, but I could not read it. Not in Linux, Windows anything!

I too would like to know a tool that can 'see' the files on any disc...

There can never be one as anyone can just make up their own format... you want something that is 'impossible'.

Yea, I had a feeling not to say that... lol.

Was just going to see what someone would say...

The PSX should have a formater built in. Like the PS3...

You could always call Sony  lol don't do that...

Three reasons to not call SONY:

1- It's an Japanese device, only SCEI can fix it for you.
2- It's an obsolete device that probably is no longer under maintenance/support.
3- Since SCPH-18000 there is a sticker on every SCEI device that states that once the seal is removed, the device will NOT BE SERVICED by the authorized service under no circumstances...

    Yea. Exactly... haha...

Just thinking what to do because if the PSX does not have a formatter built in, then how can you repair the file system...

Find someone with the same system and kindly ask them to clone their drive.

There HAS to be be a tool out there for Windows that will let you format the HDD and show debugging data...

Sony always does stuff like this...

Just a matter of finding them :luigi:

looks like windows 7 made a MBR on it once i connected it :(
the psx now dosent even get to the home menu,
    lameeeee
Shouldnt a sector by sector cloning software make fixing a psx hdd feasible?
obv only if you have another compatible hdd around

Look, I suspect these drives do have CUSTOM FIRWMARE just like regular 40GB PS2 hard drives from SONY.

The tools are out there on the Internet but I guess you will have to clone a HDD from a PSX...

Problem is, the moron who started to call unofficially the PlayStation 1 a PSX has doomed you for the use on Google.
