Hey, i'm looking at buying a PSX DESR 5700 as a fix-up job with the following issue; it displays the PSX logo as per normal, and then moves to a black screen with no response from the PSX.

Any idea's as to what the problem may be and/or how hard it is to fix?

Check for any hard drive sounds, just turn it on and press your ear to the top cover (the part facing up when it's in the horizontal position).

If you hear nothing, or a repeated, steady clicking, that's a dead HDD.

AFAIK nobody's quite worked out a method to replace the hard drive. Not an issue of finding the drive or proprietary connectors, but rather some security issues.
There's a member (whom I'm sure will post shortly) who knows everything there is to know about the PSX.

    It's a shame it's so un-fixable..
Well, it looks like I'll keep searching for a working one within my budget.

It's not un-fixable. But you will need a HDD from another PSX to fix it. Additionally you will need a update disc compatible with your PSX (PSX Update Version 2.11 for example) unit and FMCB for PSX to be able to launch the update disc. You can grab a disk from any 160GB unit. (5000/5100/5500/5700) I am sure the 250 GB HDD will work too but it won't be original, right ? ;)

If there were no FMCB for PSX it would be indeed un-fixable, though ...

Edit: Also, I know the PSX accepts *ORIGINAL* 40GB HDDs as valid and let them be written/read but I don't have a PSX update disc so I never tried to install a 40GB HDD on my PSX units. I did experiment with making them boot but because I could not re-create the HDD file system it would keep crashing while booting the XMB. -_-; (but hey it tried to boot to the XMB, that was a frigging success lol)

Official SONY 40GB HDDs should be a lot easier to source than PSX HDDs. If you don't want to record videos (It's pretty useless for you as a DVR, no ? as you're in PAL LAND)

    Thanks for the info :D
Purchased it and it should be on it's way now. Let's hope I can get it to work with one of the 40GB HDD's.

From what i've researched in the area, the PSX update disk has to be original, yes?

Unless you can somehow perform a swap trick, you should have a legit update disc...

Okay, that's not too bad i guess. Update disks are kinda expensive, but considering what they are, I suppose it's a good thing to have :)

And sorry for the noobish question, but is it possible to get some sort of detailed instruction on how to do this?
It would be greatly appreciated :)

    Instructions ?

On how to make a FMCB card which works for the PSX ?

Well once you get FMCB to run on the PSX all you need is to put the disc in and launch from uLE within FMCB.

I got the same thing, but it was just in TV mode. The PSX starts off by giving you the PSX Logo and then goes to TV Mode as its a DVR. It auto does it all the time for me, so maybe its not a error.
Have you try using the Remote? Try hitting the blue one.

The only FMCB that works on the PSX is FMCB 1.9x and needs to use the PSX's HDD for setup, right?

FMCB will boot ok without the HDD once it's installed. You're right about it not being possible to use a PSX which doesn't boot or which does not read discs to install FMCB.

What you don't know, is that the FMCB install can be cheated, using a normal PS2, a mean to move files from the PS2 MC to a PC and a hex editor if you know what you're doing.

So the PSX can use a MC for FMCB as well? I thinking of adding FMCB to my PSX, now that I have a Japan SW buy I'm not sure... I mostly hope to edit the menus to English someday.

....or use the pc FMCB installer with the ps3 memory card adapter(CECHZM1) :) sp193 was kind enough last year before he went military to give me a full tutorial on how to do this....

I've been having trouble creating a suitable FMCB card, or even one at all, so i might take your suggestion stayhye. And i'm still waiting for this thing to arrive xP

I appologise greatly for bumping this thread, however, i just wanted some more opinions. So now that the console has finally arrived, i've plugged it in and it only loaded the PSX startup screen. However, when i put in a game disk (non NTSC-J), it comes up with a message and a little loading blob in the top right of the screen, which eventually freezes. Thoughts?

Have you tried pushing select at the black screen ?

My DESR 7500 also do that, but the screen is blank simply because there's no antenna connected. Pushing select brings the XMB elements up.

Pressing select did not seem to do anything, however, now occasionally on startup, i get the loading blob in the top right side of the screen. The HDD is making reading sounds as well rather than clicking. The blob freezes when pushing select while it is on screen, then moves again.
