Hi, everyone. Original japan psx console will not work with euro 220 V standard outlets. And i really hate to use additional big 220 V -> 110 V transformers because most of switching power supplies require a bit of modding to be able to support 220. There is that i did and it works just fine, wanna share it with you, maybe it will be useful for someone. 1) С005 1000uF 220V should be replaced. I used 330uF 450V bought from ebay, it have exactly the same dimensions. 2) To disable overvoltage protection remove zener diode ZD001. 3) Strongly recommend you to replace D201 diode, cause oscillogram of the transformer secondary winding shows a bit of excess of diode reverse voltage with 220 input. I replaced MBRF1060 with MBRF20100CT, it have 3 pins opposite to MBRF1060, i just cut out left pin and wired up central. Good luck.
Nifty! Do you have instructions on how to do this for a PS1 SCPH-1001 PSU (7-pin)? I've got the console sitting around but no suitable PSU replacement, so maybe modifying the PSU for 240V is an easier option. What are the potential issues of disabling the overvoltage protection? Sounds like a bit of a nasty thing to remove.
Right now i have two ps1 on my hands and request to mod it, just need to find some time to do it, need to check elements and points to prevent some unwanted effects from happening. The most obvious reason: this protection was made to prevent users from using it in 220 outlets, IC already have suitable built-in overvoltage protection, so this solution just restricts power supply to start from a 170-180 V and above, it will not help to save circuits from high voltage surges. Just remove it and sleep well.
DESR-5000 and 7500 works well now without any need in heavy 220-110 converter, thanks to TS. Great and pretty simple mod that works. Nothing blown up or get hot.
Even though I will not apply such a mod to my consoles, I must thank you for writing this modding guide with an explanation for what each part of the mod is for. Not everybody does that. A long time ago, I received a SCPH-39001 that was modded to allow its PSU to run off the 230V mains here. I never managed to understand how the mod worked, but now I can.
Nice, I was thinking about looking into doing the same for the Dreamcast, given that the cost of PAL consoles has skyrocketed.
