    Hi all,

I have an SCPH 5XXX PSX with some kind of modchip in it (not sure which type). I have noticed that sometimes the console will boot CD-Rs fine, other times it just goes to the BIOS screen, sometimes it dies at the PS1 boot logo, or won't boot the CD-R. I have also noticed in fiddling with the reset button that some combinations of power cycles and resets cause perfect boots. Trouble is I have no idea what the pattern is. How exactly do I boot the disc with a PSX chip properly?

    1)Place CD-R into console
    2)Power on console
    3)Play

Sounds like cheap CD-Rs on a less than ideal burner to me.

Well, I burn Taiyo Yuidens at 2x, and that combo works fine on saturn, ps2, etc. So it seems that if I boot the console while holding reset OR boot it with the lid open, then close the lid at the BIOS, that the game boots normally. But if I just insert and close lid and power on, it tends to freeze or not boot. Any idea why?

Sounds kind of similar to my experience. I think your chip is only working in 4-wire mode, which is enabled by starting the system with the lid open.
