Here is my experience with PS2 modchips.

Mars - doesn't save settings - no way to play NTSC games on PAL PS2 without black border at the bottom of the screen. But it's super stable and laucnhes everething from first try. It also shows PS1 logo.

Modbo 750 v.1.93 on SCPH-9000x - PSX Screen Fix can be activated, but it doesn't work on all games (for example it doesn't work with Metal Gear Solid, Crash Bandicoot 2 and 3, maybe others). No PS1 logo. Sometimes PS1 games doesn't start flawlessly - disc just stops spinnigs and nothing happens. To fix this I usually open the lid and close it again. PS2 boot rate is perfect.

Madbo 4 v.1.99 on SCPH-7700x is basicly the same as Modbo 750 v.1.93 on SCPH-9000x.

Is there a chip that's better than modbo for PS1 games? Are original DMS4 or Matrix Infinity free from this problems? Could any of you with PAL Slim PS2 and DMS4 or MI try any of these NTSC games (MGS, Crash 2, 3)?

TBH, this situation is quite sad. I guess I could byu an NTSC PS2, but it will probably have problems with PAL games. PS1 too is far from perfect in these regard and I don't have space for another console. Plus chinese replacement lasers for PS2Slim are cheap and work good enough, which unfortunately can't be said about PS1 replacement lasers.

most mars pro chips are fakes sadly and can't program :( Thus the no saving.

I use the Modbo 4 running v1.93(it was the last matrix FW), works fine for ps1 and ps2 games.

So you are using a PAL console? From what country?

Australian (just say all PAL) consoles go crazy if you use any modbo 4 other than a V1.93, ALSO I have found connecting the "H" line (Only intended for NTSC units) fixes a few odd issues as well... The Aussie PS2's are a strange breed...

I've never had any issues with new optical pickups really, not much to them, the diode is the main concern.
A brand new one should work right off the bat, some sellers are dodgy and sell used units as new and or don't test them fully.
Just because they come from china, don't mean it's bad

Those consoles are Russian, but I don't think they are any different from other PAL consoles. I've heard horror stories about v.1.99 firmware, but in my particular case it works just as "well" as 1.93 on scph-9000x.

So, I guess you own or used to own a PS2 slim with a chip with 1.93 firmware. Can you answer these questions?
    1. Does it show PS1 license screen? Something similar to the first screen here http://www.psxdev.net/help/cdrom_mastering.html
    2. Do some NTSC games like MGS, Crash Bandicoot 2, etc. work in fullscreen mode without black bar at the bottom? Maybe you can test Wipeout 3 or Nightmare creatures? In my case gameplay is absolutely fine, but intro screens and movies exhibit black bar problem.

I realize that all those modchips are clones of another clones, i just need to figure out whether it was my "luck" with bad clones and I just need to find a good one or forget about this and accept that no modchip is perfect.

I've tried it, on scph-77008+modbo (with disabled screen fix) and it didn't work. It showed black screen with white text saying something like: "it's not a ps1 disk, please insert a ps1 disk".

I suppose there is a way to disable my chip with some button combo (or I can always disable it with soldering iron), but how would an unmodified ps2 boot burned cds or games from another region?

The modchip must be active and set into PS1 mode (if it has one).

In answer to the other questions,
1: Yes the PS1 title is shown
2: I have never really paid much attention to the aspect ratio, so I don't know..

Also as for the "Matrix" logo ect, you can turn it off on the modbo but I don't know if it disables the second logo shown when the game starts..

There's a reason why I bought two DMS4 Pro SE chips.
