Hello, I want to increase the output-voltage of the audio-channels of my psx. Is there someone who can help me? Do I have to change the bios or something else? What kind of hardware will I need (cables, pc-cards etc. or a dtl...?)? Which software do I need? I'm a psx-newbie but I know that this is possible without any soldering. So, for me, the only way is manipulation of the psx-sofware. Thank you for your answer! tomaru
I'm unaware of a software modification. I would suggest that the easiest way would be to use an external amplifier. Alternatively, depending on what model PSX you own you may be able to modify the audio output stage, perhaps by replacing the Op-Amps between the DAC and the RCA jacks. But the'res no way you can do this without soldering anything. http://dogbreath.de/PS1/index.html is a good place to learn about the audio output stage of the PSX. May I ask why you want to do this?
I want to use the psx as a cd-player, but I think, that the way of Mr. Feuerbacher is not perfect. You can only amplify signals you get. So I want to improve the output itself without amplification of possible errors. What kind of hardware do I need to get access to the bios of the psx? Thanks
The audio output from the digital portion of the Playstation console is in the I2S format. Info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I2s By using I2S you can bypass the whole analog circuitry and put whatever D/A converter you fancy.
If you want to replace the BIOS then you'll either need to desolder the bios chip & replace it with a flash/eprom. Off the top of my head it's a TSOP. If you can't find a programmable replacement with the same pinout then you'll need to run alot of wires. I'm not sure if the cd player allows you to set the maximum volume. If it does then there is no way to make it louder. Even if you can make it louder, then you'll probably hit clipping problems. You could get it to read the cd tracks as data and manipulate them with the CPU. However the quality will be worse.
