I have a PlayStation mod chip from about 14-15 years ago. Has there been any major change in the mod chips? Is there any reason for me to get a new one?

If it's a 4 wire chip, then I'd suggest swapping it with a Stealth chip, because with the 4 wire one you won't be able to play Dino Crisis and other copy protected PSX games, due to the games checking the presence of a chip.
What model is your PSX?I heard that 100x systems must have a switch installed on pin 5 and 6 of the chip to play Dino Crisis and copy protected PSX games, due to the Stealth 2.8 not being fully supported on a 100x.

It's not a big deal to patch the few games that require it. Though it can be annoying if you have original discs you use as then you need GS codes.

Thanks everyone. I think I'll just keep the old one. Although the Mayumi v2.1 is tempting...

One of these days these ancient installs might end up in a museum.

I've got a 4 wire mod chip in an SCPH-5502 and I'm able to play Dino Crisis, though it's an original disc. Shouldn't that detect the chip anyway and refuse to play regardless? I'm fairly sure the chip blurts out the protection code no matter what disc is inserted...

In fact I've played hundreds of games on there and have yet to encounter one that complains about the presence of a mod chip.

Is it a PAL or the import NTSC disc? PAL games have don't have modchip detection.

AAaaaah, PAL. That's one of a few discs from the 'old days' I still own. Not tried an NTSC copy of Dino Crisis in there, in fact I don't have any spare blanks to test ether unfortunately.

Though weren't these games patched at some point anyway?

EDIT: As I can see above you can patch mod chip detecting games before you burn them, though I can see the argument for installing a stealth chip so you can play import originals.

I remember the old method for burning PS1 games was to use Alcohol and the RAW DAO option, and now everyone uses IMGBurn. Do these new modchips get rid of the RAW DAO requirement or that method was just a falsity? I don't want to install Alcohol once again, as I do have a old type PS1 with chip.

Imgburn is fine, the chip has nothing to do with format the cd is burned in anyway.

RAW DAO it's very important for libcrypted games (that are some PAL games)
