This is what I bought: After being stuck at a USPS facility for over a week, they finally delivered it today and this is what I got:
First and foremost: Was it properly packaged? Before you start blaming USPS, let's face it, we all know that parcels are not handled with kid gloves, no matter the carrier. They are subject to being dropped, they might end up having a heavier boxed dropped onto them and so on. In other words, if it was packed as pictured in your 3rd image, just in a naked box, blame the sender, not the carrier. If you do send or receive anything valuable/possibly irreplaceable, factor in plenty of crumple zone, make sure it is packed into a stout box with generous amounts of padding, if you can get it double boxed, even better!
There was some scrunched-up newspaper in the package that I removed to take the photos, but yeah the seller didn't pack it well either.
I absolutely agree with what jaunelapin is saying, and sounds as if the packing wasnt very good. However, that box got soaked,,very very soaked. Which is neither the sender or receivers fault in most cases, and likely not in this one. I received a package (paper cigarette tubes of all things) a few months back that was left out in the pouring rain on my steps all day with no protective bag. All USPS vehicles are supposed to be equipped with these bags by what I was told, and the carrier is supposed to wrap any package that could be affected by weather. Hopefully it still functions though sadly it is far from pretty now best of luck getting it sorted out also the delay in delivery, if that shows on the tracking page you will have better luck chewing on people until someone covers the damages, that to me shows they were waiting for it to dry knowing it was damaged.
Yes the console still works, although I bought it mainly for the box (I already have a loose console). The last time it showed up on tracking was on Sept 8th (1 week ago), then there were no updates which made me think it had been lost or stolen. After calling USPS, they told me to wait a few more days or file a claim. Today the tracking magically updated and the package left the facility today and was delivered, and I was relieved, until I opened the package. I'll try to flatten the sides with something heavy, but it doesn't look hopeful. I'm still on a quest for a boxed VCD Saturn.
If that indeed is water damage (did not notice that at first), you are rightfully blaming the carrier. Packaging quality is one story, but damage from exposure to the elements whatsoever is a different tale. When you claim for damages with the carrier, focus on the water damage, rather than the obvious. Goods damaged by an external, physical force will likely be blamed (as previously stated in more than enough cases rightfully so) on improper packaging. Guess why many businesses shipping glass bottles (wine in particular) will use a carrier approved box (usually says so on the side)? Exactly so they can claim damages sustained from physical force much easier.
Wrong - Japanese carriers are near flawless. I've only ever had one thing arrive damaged through Japan Post.
There's definitely water damage by the looks of stains and shriveled cardboard. Does anyone have experience filing a damage claim with USPS?
I was somewhat lucky with my damaged package, the carrier knew it was their fault and when approached about the issue they preferred to personally cut us a check for the amount the package cost and not involve USPS. I would guess when proven to be a specific carriers fault this could look bad on their record, idk, in my case they were rather anxious to pay for it over us making a claim. https://www.usps.com/help/claims.htm should answer all you need including info about what you will need to provide Best of luck getting it sorted out!
After letting it sit under some very heavy boxes and gluing one of the sides back together , this is probably the best it's going to look. I tried ironing it but it didn't seem to have any effect. Not going to bother dealing with USPS. Also I just noticed there is a typo on the back of the box, which is strange for an official Sega product.
Is the back of the box supposed to be in English? And I'm pretty sure that long green oval has Chinese in it, unless it's an incredibly long Japanese kanji word.
Yes it's in English like the other Asian units, though this the only Saturn console that has Chinese on the box. The green oval says there is a Chinese language instruction manual included. The Chinese name for Sega Saturn is also printed on the sides of the box (世嘉土星).
So, was there a white 220 V Video CD console inside? They put a sticker on the box, as if to hide it.
The console is the white 220v Asian Saturn with a red Video CD logo printed on the lid. It was missing the Video CD card but I have a spare one for it.
