question about neo geo emulation on xbox

Hi again people. Recently I asked for help understanding the PC Engine and its emulation on the xbox. Well I think I got it figured out but now Im working on emulating the Neo Geo systems.

I understand there is a way to emulate the NeoGeo and the NeoGeo CD systems on the xbox. Heres the emulators I have for each.

My question is, are there any emulators that combine the 2, or am I stuck with 2 diffrent emulators. Also how is the performance with them on the xbox. Thanks for any info anyone can offer.

 

the best neogeo/cd emu on xbox is kawaks,if i remember right its called kawa-x its running most of the games... and it has cps2 too.

 

really? I didnt see anything about it on xboxscene. can it play neogeo and neogeo CD. I really dont want to have to use 2 emulators for them, and the neogeo CD one that I have requires real CD roms. Meaning I would have to burn each game to CD-R to play it. I would prefer to use just ISO's of all the games.


I am I allowed to ask where to find this emulator? If Im not then please let me know and dont tell me, been a while since I went over the rules on emulators. I know rom requests are not allowed. Anyway I have also heard that you have to use some program to organize the rom lists or something before they will play, is this true to?

Sites that host only emulators are ok. Like:

www.zophar.net But thats all I know for a good source of emulators. THey don't carry all emulators, although they used to..

Thanks guys. I didnt mean to sound ignorant but about a year ago I was looking for emulators on yahoo and google and I went to a site that screwed up my PC really bad with spyware and messed up my registrey. Thats why I asked.

Anyway I looked into it more over at xbs and the Kawaks emulator (or however you spell it) was discontenued around late 2003. Thus its incomplete and many games are not supported. I was told to use FBAxxx and I am attempting to do so. However its been many years since I worked with romsets and the like back in the older days of mame so I am having trouble getting back with it. I have gotten used to the dump roms in this folder and play thing.

I am also not able to get FBAxxx to boot on my xbox. I have asked over at xbs since Im not sure anyone here could help with that problem.
Anyway thanks for all the help and if anyone can recommend me some good games that would be super. I know about the kof series and metal slug but thats about all I know. Thanks again for all the help! :rambo:

 

Micjohvan: there is a reason why I don´t use zophar, but XPort is a very great site, with out any popups, or for that matter spyware.

And if you want to have help to removing spyware, and the likes, then PM me. I think I can help you some of the way there.

 

For Xbox software, search for xbins.org and find their IRC channel. It will tell you how to get on their FTP. Use FBAXXX. It runs all the CPS and NeoGeo games near perfectly. For NeoGeo CD, you have to use that NeoCDSDL thing. And yes you have to use real CDs (or CD-Rs).

 

Acually someone made a few adjustments for the neocdsdl-x emualtor for the xbox to run neo cd's from the hdd,I could never get to work,but it does work it you do it right.

 

Thanks guys. I already know how to use xbins and have been using it to get all the stuff I have for the past year. Also I dont have problems in removing spyware and such as I run a computer business and I see the crap almost daily so its not that I cant deal with it, its just that I want to avoid having to if at all possalbe.

I have FBAxxx right now but cant get it to run on the xbox yet. I am having trouble with the batch files and stuff. Mind you I havent fooled with it to much yet. Anyway some of the games I want to play are the metal slug series and the king of fighters series. Are those cd based or can then run off the hdd for FBaxxx as I would much prefer that to burning a billion cd-rs.

The only CD based games are NeoGeo CD games. All regular arcade games are regular Zips full of ROM files. Metal Slug 1 and 2 are available on both NeoGeo Cartridge (ROMs) and NeoGeo CD-ROM. King of Fighters up until KoF99' are available too on NeoGeo CD-ROM. They never released KoF 2000' on NeoGeo CD.

The only reason I could think you're having trouble with FBAXXX is because theres actually different downloads for it cause it has 457567575 billion megabytes of "skin" data that isn't included in all the download packages. And without that data it won't run or even tell you why it won't run.

Atleast that's what I remember. Actually it might be that FBA"X" and not the triple. There shouldn't be any bat/batch files involved though. Atleast I don't remember any. If you have to though, download kawa-X, it's old but it works and is very easy to setup.

 

Ok I have it running but there are more problems. Insted of retyping them all here I will copy my post from over at their boards to show you. Keep in mind that something I say arnt relavant to this site and this is just a stright copy and paste.

The main thing needing fixed is you need a readme with the thing. There is one with it but all it says is you have to pack the xbe. No instructions nor anything.

So I get it installed and running and theres no music... thats a big nono in my book. So I get a skin pack and find that some skins have music in them so I figured I would try them. Well one skin works, another dosent appear to be complete because if I switch to it my xbox locks up and if I reboot the emu it sits at a black screen until I ftp in and remove the crap skin. ( its called Artik btw) Anyway the other skin is the fighters one and its supposed to have music to. It will boot at least but the music wont play and I cant figure out why for the life of me. I understand XSL somewhat and can see that it should work but i get ziltch outta my TV and I know its not the volume or anything like that.

On top of that I cant get roms to work. I have the KOF2002 zip file. If I dump it in the roms folder the menu says its there but when I try to run it it gives me a error saying a bunch of files are missing. So I came to the boards and saw the topic on making seperate folders in the roms folder for diffrent platforms and try that. However now the emu wont find the game at all.

So in short heres what I need help with:

1) music playing in the background at the main menus. Thats all I want it dosent have to change or anything just one song that plays while you are at the menu.

2) I need help understanding the rom system and what is required to get them to work. Keep in mind I like simple and dont want to have to update roms and crap like that. I just want to keep the same version if it works and fill it with roms and play at my leasure.

3) I need help finding out why the skins dont work. Although if I can get music some other way this wont matter.


That about covers it. I dont mean to sound brash but I have been fighting this thing for 2 days now and xbs is to slow and dosent seem to want to help me. Anyway I would be really grateful for any help I can get. Thanks!"




Anyway there it is. If any of you guys can help me out that would be super great. I would take a look at kawa-x if I could find it. Also like I said it was discontenued some time ago and thus some roms may not work with it. Does it support most games and does it have a nice GUI with music seeing as how thats a feature that for some reason I cant stand to be without. i have to use kawax a long time now but its very easy to setup. take into consideration that xbox's emus stuck a lot of times because of their saves. if you delete a save from an older emu it runs perfectly after. kawax has very simple menu without music if i remember right but you see the menu for a few secs so it doesnt really matter:thumbsup: but it runs about 70% of the games ...i believe you can found it at the usual p2p places emu alone or a ready full iso.

 

Xbins has Kawaks-X, it's just hidden somewhere in the tree of directories. I don't know why you want music so badly. I find the music in menus pretty annoying.

About the ROM Sets. you're screwed. No matter what there's a very good chance many of your romsets won't match up with what they want. Take the Clrmamepro dat file and get Clrmamepro to check your romsets against FBA's romsets it expects. This will help you find out why of your ROMs are the same as theirs.

 

Hi again and thanks for the replys. I have gotten the skin and music taken care of through some elbox grease and time lol. Anyway im still haveing trouble with roms. Insted of typing it all out again though im going to copy my post from the fbaxxx forums here. Keep in mind some info is not realitive to this site and this is just a copy and paste job.

After a few more hours of work I got music working. It turns out that the options for music wont appear unless a skin has music already set to it, then you can enable it or disable it. So now I understand most of the music and skin things. Right now im working on changing the default skin to a diffrent one and getting that to work.
So all thats left is help with my roms. I dont understand how it all works. Im used to any rom will work on a emulator for that system. I dont get the whole "up todate version" stuff. Also I have heard about running rom sets though programs called clrmamepro or somthing like that. If anyone could explain that to me that would be great. Thanks!"

Micjohvan: can it maybe be, you are missing the neogeo bios perhaps ? Just a wondering anyway.

 

:thumbsup: I dont think so. When I downloaded the emulator from their site I also got a file called neogeo.zip they said I would need. I placed it in my roms folder but it didnt help.

I AM able to run cps2 games though. I only tested MVC but it worked super great. So I think it may be a problem with the neo geo emulation. When I try to run it, it comes up and says im missing all the files. I check the numbers on each one aginst the ones in my roms zip file and one number is changed for example:

*i can remember the numbers or names so this is just made up for example*


KOF 256 is missing

however in my zip it would be the file called KOF 246

and thats how it is the whole way through. So I can only guess my rom is out of date or something? And if so how can I get this working again. Thanks for the help guys, you have no idea how much I appracte it.

 

Use ClrMAMEPRO like I suggested. Chances are say you have KOF98.ZIP, but actually your ROM is now KOF98a.zip, because a newer version was dumped and its no longer what it was. Also the Neogeo.zip, or rather the set of bios roms has been updated on more than one occassion. So again, use CLRMAMEPRO or examine the DAT in notepad/wordpad and figure out if your rom's zip name is wrong. Like I said, by simply renaming it to the alternate set that it is now, you may be up and running that easily.

 

Ok, Im not that far yet but I will work it out when I get there I hope.
Anyway I make new skins for all my xbox emualtors as I get them so Im working on one for FBAxxx. I only have one image done for the CPS2 portion of it but I wanted to show it to you guys and if you want I will release the whole thing when its done. Also If you guys want I will release the photoshop files so the layers are still in tact.

Hi. Sorry to bring up a dead post but I need a little more help with the neogeo roms. I have downloaded almost 20 diffrent roms from 8 diffrent sites and I was only able to get one working. That one was MetalSlug2 and I had to rename all the files in it to get it working.

All the others I have when I scan them with romcenter say they are missing files (all the files almost) and it says everything in this zip dosent belong to that rom. I thought ok, bad rom the first few times. However now its happening on every one I download. All these cant be wrong, so I think they just need to be fixed with RomCenter but for some reason I cant repair ANYTHING in rom center. All options are grayed out. Can anyone help me get some neogeo games working so I can play them. I really need help as Im pulling my hair out. Thanks for any insight anyone can offer.
