Currently, I have a rather crappy cable modem that was given to me by Charter (2002 model, discontinued at this point), and I have various problems trying to connect it to my router/xbox 360. The USB part of it works, but the Ethernet cord part is hit or miss a good portion of the time (mostly miss). I was wondering: if I buy a store Cable Modem, would that correct the problem, or is there limits with this sort of thing depending on the company (In this case, Charter).
Get one from your ISP cable provider instead of buying one, because if that one craps out beyond the warranty limit you have to buy another one. Whereas if you get one from your isp, if that breaks they replace it free of charge.
do you have to notify the isp?....i myself wish to change mine as it only has one port going out(so no internet and ps2 at the same time) would it interfere with my internet connection?...basically would it scre anything up?
Depending on the tech your company uses, it's usually no problem to get another modem. Just don't expect faster speeds, it's alll usually limited by the company. I bought a kit and hacked my motorola docsis unit, but if they catch me I am done for. But having priority on the node sure has benefits.
thanks assembler.....my modem doesnt allow for more than one line going out to it..meaning i could only hook up my computer, and not anything else......f i were to get a new modem, i'd have to run a ethernet cable under the floor to my room.........hmmm....would a wireless router do the same thing?.....they most have a modem in them correct?....or i could run from my modem to the wireless router to my computer?.....i know this sounds stupid, but i've had very little experience with this kinda stuff............and i'd rather have a yes or no answer before attempting anything
Yeah, it sounds like you need a router. It's pretty standard for your Cable ISP to only give you one connection...one jack on your cable modem...it's what you pay for. But with a router, you can hook both your PC and Playstation 2 to that connection. You'd just have to forward the proper ports to your Playstation 2.
