For you US guys out there, lets say I go on holiday to the US and want to rent or buy an old car to drive down route 66.
How long would it take to get my drivers license (avarage time for somebody that can drive already) and how much would it cost?
Basically asking for the quickest and cheapest way as I will not have much time.

You already have a Dutch license? Else I highly doubt you can get a license on a tourist visum..

Well yeah thats kinda the problem not at the moment, long story :)

I have seen some people on tv do the same on a tourist visa so I think it's possible.

    Can anybody confirm this?

You can't get a license unless you're a resident (citizen) to the state you're visiting. You have to use your visa status.

Aye, you can't get a license on a tourist visa waiver. You need a permanent residence here.

If you are licensed in your home country and have a tourist visa, you will be able to rent a car and drive in the US. Be sure to get familiar with local driving laws as they do differ. For example, in some areas you can talk on a mobile while driving. In others you can only do it while using a hands-free device. If you run afoul of a driving law, you will be ticketed and fined.

You'll need to get your licence in the Netherlands and then get an International Driving Permit which is basically a translation of your licence into many different languages, including English. I'm not sure what you'd call it in Dutch, but I presume you get it from the ANWB. You'll need to bring both your licence and your permit with you when you go to the States and show them when you rent a car. You won't be able to buy and insure your own car if you're a tourist.

Another thing you should be aware of is age restriction on car rentals. If you're 25 or over, no worries, if not it gets really expensive/impossible to rent a car.

Route 66 is still there, but it's been built over, abandoned or bypassed quite a bit. Driving on the interstate, you'll often see its remains running parallel to you, half-covered in sand. There are quite a few specific guidebooks and websites that tell you how to drive what is left though.
