I came across this picture on Ebay.

Maybe it's my mind playing tricks on me but I vaguely remember seeing this kind of boxart in advertisement very early in the NES's life. Did they use this artwork during the New York trial run? Anyone have any idea what other games had boxes like this?

By the way here is the link to the Ebay auction. I don't think he'll get a buyer though.

  2. I'm not sure what the guy means by "Black cart" in his auction description, but yeah, all the original NES games at release and a lot of the official (possibly Nintendo-published, not sure) carried the same cover art style - I can say for a fact that Gyromite, Pinball, Super Mario Bros., Duck Hunt, Kid Icarus, and a couple of others had similar box/cartridge art.

He means that the box (and cart label) are black. Kid Icarus had a silver box. I have been looking around and the only early games that I could find that have labels like this are Donkey Kong, Popeye, Donkey Kong Jr, ect. I'm thinking the only games like this are Arcade Classics series.

  4. Yeh, I knew Kid Icarus and Metroid have silver boxes, I meant the design and layout in general. And yeah, the Arcade Classics series was just one of the various series that Nintendo classed it's early games in - I believe there was also a Zapper series, Sports series, ROB series, and something like an Action or Adventure series as well.
