I will be a proud owner of my first Sega Saturn backup ram cart thanks to SovietStriker , and my question is do I need to do anything other then stick that sucker in there? Is it just compatable with certain games?

    Thanks.

I think you'll find it's compatible with most, if not all, games. Though games have varying ways to "ask" you where you want to save (Rayman does at bootup, other games have it in the option screen, for instance).

And if a game doesn't support it, you can always copy the savegame using the memory manager (hold A at bootup, I think)

I did put one of the China made ones off of ebay once in my Saturn and the Saturn said it could not find a memory cart, is this common?

It might very well be, for instance the Action Replay with save function isn't recognized as a memory card, if you want to save you have to copy the savegames from the internal memory to the cartridge, in a menu that's shown at bootup. However, there might just as well be carts that are recognized as normal save ram cartridges, if they don't have their own menu. Maybe it's just bad contact, that happens a lot on the Saturn (and even more with 3rd party cartridges)
