3D Studio Max 4 is the version they say the plugin is compatible with... however it's also the last DOS version; I'm not sure if the devs kept backwards compatibility for plugins, so I'd suggest you stick to that version.
According to Wikipedia, yes, SoftImage 3.7 has the PS1 attributes, and maybe even one or two versions earlier than that; I just mentioned the version I was able to find and try.

As stated in the first post, this thread was split from isuffje's thread as it was going off topic. Please remember - if you want to ask a question unrelated to the thread (in this case, the topic is a homebrew game), feel free to start a thread!

Regarding old commercially available software - this is NOT the same as an old SDK. If the software is still available to purchase in a new version, don't discuss downloading the older version.

^ You don't need one of those to develop with PSY-Q, unless you plan to go for Code Warrior + debugging modules and test on real hardware all the way.

Well, SoftImage is going to be killed off next year, IIRC. Would that make the discussion a little more legit? :p Then again, I guess my approach of not using commercial tools is probably better since copyright can't apply to hode-made COLLADA converters.

Downloading was not discussed, so I think we're good :)
Software itself can be freely discussed (right?)

To use Psy-Q you do NOT need a dongle whatsoever. The dongle imaged here is for the blue 'Psy-Q Development Systems Cartridge' from 1995 (SCEE made it as a cheaper alternative development kit but SCEI didn't like the idea. The rest is history now). It's only needed for the 'Windows 95 Debugger' in conjunction with the 'Psy-Q Server'. Even so, I have a crack for it available. Another useless piece of hardware I'm afraid.

They would have eventually figured out that dongles are a more harmful nuisance to developers than good :)
