(Apologies if this is the wrong category)

I recently bought a bunch of dev hardware including an almost new boxed Xbox Debug kit including boxed accessories and have some questions about it:

    - How much is this kind of thing worth? I've searched the internet but there does not seem to be anything recent and the ones I have found are generally not in the same condition.
    - I booted up the console to test if it works and it appears there's a game called "Wheelman" installed. From searching it seems that this game ended up being released on the 360. Is there a way to dump this off the system easily? (I don't want to open the controller boxes to launch the game)
    - Are there any other markings I should look for to find out more about the console?

    Thanks!

The value is determined by its condition and content on the HDD. If it's an unreleased build then that obviously increases the value. You should take pictures and post them here. Be sure to exclude the serial number as it could get someone in trouble for getting rid of the kit. Also, to dump the game you can easily connect it to your LAN and install the Xbox SDK. Can't post it here but if you Google it you will find it.

    You should do the following:

Find and install the original Xbox SDK on a windows xp pc (I was unable to get it working on my gaming pc)
Connect your Xbox via ethernet and turn it on
Use the Xbox Neighborhood application that's part of the Xbox SDK to FTP into the Xbox
Then Navigate to the Devkit folder (that's usually where most stuff will be located)
And then find the folders you need and copy them to your pc

I hope this helps. Its important to do this as soon as possible because those HDD are usually pretty old and they are the older IDE HDD. I had one die on me recently.

    Paging @Borman !

EDIT: OK I should have posted this with the comment instead of being a smart little baby but what evz.

First all you need from the SDK is the Shell Extension and nothing more(I can link you if you want)

Second It will require Windows XP or a VM of XP since the Shell extension does not work on Vista+ but! There is a homebrew version named "yelo neighborhood", Its pretty much the same as the SDK one but runs on newer systems tho iirc it sometimes has problem starting for some people.

And third! No you wont need the controllers since it should be as easy as plugging in the Xbox to the same network as your PC and powering it on, Everything else is done via the SDK neighborhood shell extension or the yelo neighborhood.

Sorry for my terrible explanation :(

Basically do exactly what fate6 said. If you need any more direct help (eg. a step by step walkthrough or something) I can definitely help out; I setup a virtual machine on my PC only a few weeks ago to fiddle around with my debug, so I've got the steps fresh in my mind.

I doubt someone would get in trouble for 15 year old dev hardware, unless it was something really out of the ordinary. Then again, Micro$oft did remove my DVT4 from eBay...

Pretty much this. Same applies for 360 for them. They dont care anymore unless it's listed for sale on ebay and such.

Thanks for the replies folks! I'll get the SDK set up today.

    Here's some pics I took: http://imgur.com/a/8Vr3R

Edit: Also it turns out one of the controllers has been opened so after I get a copy of the game I'll launch it and see what it is ;)

Midway Acquires Ratbag, Pacts with Ant Bully
By Rick DeMott | Tuesday, August 9, 2005 at 12:00am
In Business, Business | Headline News | Geographic Region: All, Australia

Midway Games Inc. announced that it has acquired Ratbag Holdings Pty Ltd., a game development studio based in Adelaide, South Australia. Midway acquired the privately-held developer in a primarily stock transaction for 418,570 Midway shares. The studio is currently working on several unannounced Midway products for both current- and next-generation systems. The studio will be renamed Midway Studios - Australia.

Midway's president/ceo David F. Zucker commented, "This transaction is consistent with our strategy of adding depth to our internal product development organization and strengthening our ability to deliver high-quality, compelling and commercially successful content for current and future systems. Ratbag brings to Midway a rare combination of development expertise in driving and on-foot combat that they are incorporating into our games now in development."

Midway's svp of worldwide studios Matt Booty said, "We are excited to add this proven studio with solid management and a strong development team to Midway, and establish a firm foothold in Australia, a great location for top entertainment industry talent. We plan to leverage their talent and technology across our internal development studios, which will support our goal of maintaining our leadership in high quality development."

Ratbag is a developer of interactive entertainment products. Established in 1994, Ratbag's first title, POWERSLIDE, was released in 1998 to critical and commercial success. The studio has grown into one of the world's premier racing game developers.

In addition to shares issued as consideration for the acquisition of Ratbag, rights to acquire a total of 38,050 shares of Midway common stock were issued to key Ratbag employees as retention incentives. The rights to acquire the stock will vest in stages over a period of three years, provided the employee remains at the company. Ratbag employees who received the rights were: Tony Albrecht, Karl Burdack, Cam Dunn, Kim Forrest, Franta Fulin, Adam Mackay-Smith, Robin Maddock, Andrew Medlin, Sadhana Pereira and David Todd.

Moreover, Midway and Warner Bros. Interactive Ent. announced a multi-territory publishing agreement that grants Midway the rights to publish interactive games for console, handheld and PC platforms based on the upcoming computer animated motion picture, THE ANT BULLY.

"We are very pleased to be partnering with Warner Bros. Interactive Ent. to bring THE ANT BULLY into the interactive space," said Zucker. "Midway is looking forward to publishing great games based on this exciting film property for a younger audience of players."

"Being a computer animated film, THE ANT BULLY will be an exciting property to develop as a game," said Jason Hall, svp of Warner Bros. Interactive Ent. "THE ANT BULLY is a highly anticipated film and we look forward to working with Midway to create dynamic games based on a movie with mass appeal for young gamers."

From director John A. Davis, of the Academy Award-nominated JIMMY NEUTRON: BOY GENIUS, produced by Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman, John A. Davis and exec produced by Keith Alcorn, the family adventure features the voice talents of Nicolas Cage, Alan Cumming, Zach Tyler Eisen, Paul Giamatti, Myles Jeffrey, Regina King, Cheri Oteri, Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, Jake Szymanski, and Lily Tomlin. The film is scheduled for a 2006 release from Warner Bros. Pictures. The movie is being produced by Playtone Production, in association with DNA Prods. Inc.,

These announcements come on the heels of the announcement of Midways lower second quarter numbers. Net revenues for the 2005 second quarter were $36.9 million, compared with 2004 second quarter net revenues of $47.3 million. The 2005 second quarter loss applicable to common stock was $29.9 million or a loss of $0.35 per share, compared with a 2004 second quarter loss applicable to common stock of $11.2 million or a loss of $0.17 per share. The second quarter results were below previously provided expectations primarily due to lower-than-forecasted sales of UNREAL CHAMPIONSHIP 2, as well as the writedown of capitalized product development costs for upcoming releases and the need for additional reserves for markdowns.

Warner Bros. Interactive Ent. Inc., a Warner Bros. Ent. company, is a premier licensor and a developer of entertainment content for the interactive space across all current and future platforms, including consoles, PC-based gaming and wireless applications.

Headquartered in Chicago, with offices in San Diego, Seattle, Austin, Los Angeles, Munich and London, Midway Games Inc. is a leading developer and publisher of interactive entertainment software for major videogame systems. More information about Midway can be obtained at www.midway.com.

Interesting! I knew the kit came from Midway (A PS2 debug unit I also got has a Midway UK asset tag) but I assumed Ratbag was just a company that bought assets after Midway's bankruptcy.

    Update:
I installed the SDK using all of your helpful instructions and pulled everything I could from the drive. I then gave the game a try to see what state it's in and I think its a build somewhere in the first few months of development. Unfortunately the only screen I have with a SCART connection is nowhere near the network so I could not make use of the SDK's screenshot tool.

The game has a simple menu with three levels. The only one that worked properly was the 'brooklyn' level, which is a static scene with a car and some textured buildings. I could move the camera around but not much else.

The other two levels crashed within a second of starting them but before it crashes I could move about and shoot. There's some basic animations but not a lot of textures.

All of the levels have the Ratbag logo and some googling got me to this blog post where a dev talks about the final days of Ratbag. I'm pretty sure he's talking about this game so if the PS2 tool I also got has been untouched there may be an updated version of this game on there.

My last question now is just figuring out the value of this system and if there's any other cool things I could load onto it. Anyone got ideas for either?
