Rare PC Games I'm looking for

  1. Rare PC Games I'm looking for--FOUND!!!

I've now found both the games I was looking for. Please see most recent post for details
    =========================
At my website I've put up a list of rare PC games I'm looking for. After seeing that site, a member of another forum told me to ask here, saying "If these people can't help you, then consider your search to be over."

The two games I'm looking for are Last Half of Darkness III and The Dark Convergence. Both were for IBM PCs and were probably released in the late-eighties or early nineties on floppy disks. Last Half III, if its anything like the first two games, was an adventure game that played a lot like Deja Vu and Shadowgate. I have no idea what The Dark Convergence was like as I've only ever seen a description of it in the Software Toolworks catalogue and that was a long time ago.

If anyone knows anything about these games or where they could be attained, please tell me.

    Thanks.

Do they pop up on a search for abandonware?

If they don't I'd say that the latter might just be an announced but unreleased game.

I'd check ebay uk, they tend to have more like that, in the usa, we tend to throw away / poorly treat older pc games.

  3. Neither game shows up on Abandonware sites.

Dark Convergence might very well be vaporware--the only place I remember seeing it listed was in a catalogue published by Software Toolworks in the early 1990s. I think I also saw a walkthru or FAQ or something make an offhand mention of it, but I can't find that.

Last Half of Darkness III however I have good reason to believe exists. For one, I've e-mailed the current copyright holders (who have published a fourth game in the series), and according to them there was a third game. I have also found a walkthru for the first LHOD in which at the end the author briefly gives his opinion on the second and third games in the series (I've tried to E-Mail this guy but his address is no longer valid).

EDIT: Okay, I've figured out how to post links. This is that walkthru I mentioned, where at the end the author says:

The way he's talking, I don't think he's referring to the CD-ROM game.

Retro PC gaming doesn't seem too big on this forum, it's certainly not as much of a focus as retro consoles. Assem mentioned abandonware sites; it might actually be worth registering at one of bigger site's forums (underdogs springs to mind) and asking them as well. The DOSBox forums would also be worth calling in at.

I hadn't heard of the games you're after, anyway. Sorry.

    ...

Best of luck. It can be a harrowing experience; I've been trying to track down a copy of the PC fighting game Fatal Encounter for about 10 years now. It exists, but the company's only copy has since succombed to disk failure. No one else seems to have any recollection of it, and since it was released only in Europe and in small numbers, I may never see it. *sniff*

Awww crap, I had some links to OLD DOS games sites in my favorites before I formated a couple days ago. They had some REALLY rare stuff for download for free. Of course if its still valid this would be piracy.

I was getting the games for DosBox on the Xbox. I MAY have a favorites list backup somewhere if I can find it. I will post up any links I can find. Good hunting!

Heres a link to a site where you can download some of the Home of Darkness games. Not sure if its the one you want but these guys stock all kinds of OLD PC games for download and for free to ^^

    http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?id=2184

That link takes you right to the page for Home of Darkness

    Ask on www.digitpress.com

I don't really know a whole lot about IBMPC collecting...and I don't think there's many more of them on there....

...but there was a thread there about a Man who owned a LUDICRIOUS amount of ancient PC game software...I believe it filled an old, unused, elementary school. The guy sells the games...

I think the thread was there...I'm looking for it now...I know I read an article about the guy somewhere as well.

I'll let you know if I find anything.

  8. I'm not so sure it would.

See, I actually E-Mailed the current rights-holders of the series, asking if they still sold the games. Their response was to the effect of "we don't, but you should check abandonware sites."

The official website (which unfortunately only covers the fourth game in the series) is here if anyone else wants to try contacting 'em and see if they get a different response.

By the way, thanks to a member here I've found THE DARK CONVERGENCE. So now all that's left is the ever-continuing search for Last Half of Darkness III.

wow where did you find the Dark Convergance at? Sorry I couldnt help much man but I will keep a eye out!

  10. Another forum member pointed me to this:

    http://members.aol.com/ariesmidloth/games.htm

Apparently, it's the author's homepage and he decided to put the game (and its sequel, which I didn't know about) up for download.

I wish the Last Half of Darkness guys had decided to do that. That would make things so much easier.

If you have access to usenet, it might be worth asking around over on alt.binaries.games.adventure

  13. ... I originally posted the below over at Digitpress, but this topic came up in a Google search and I remembered how this forum helped me find The Dark Convergence, so I figured I'd pop back in here and report my progress.

    BUMP!

I hope I'm allowed to do that to these types of threads, it's just that I think my search for Last Half of Darkness III may be just about over.

I've found out something interesting. A lot of sites claim to have (and a few reviews claim to have played) a 256-color VGA version of LHOD. Now, as far as I know, the first two games in the series were EGA (16 color) and then there were the Windows CD-ROM games, and LHOD3 was supposed to be a 256-color game, so this may very well be the game I'm looking for.

The only problem is, I only ever found ONE site that had the game for download, in an ARJ archive... and that site was down. Every other site I've seen that claimed to have it was either a text file listing the names of zip archives (why the heck are these things even up on the internet?) or some bizarre site where you could order discs of old DOS games, and I'm not really up to taking the chance on such a thing.

So, anyone got any further suggestions?

It's sad that the games company which was its "mother" refuses to give any kind of information about the title. Does it mean that they haven't got even a simple copy of it? :S

  15. WRF at least confirmed for me that the game exists, which in itself is a pretty big help.

EDIT: Well, I managed to find another site that had the VGA version for download. Turns out its not part III but just a remake of Part I.

  16. Last Half of Darkness III - FOUND!

An extra special thanks to Stiletto from this forum for helping me track down an owner of the game who was willing to sell his copy. Thanks, Stiletto.

Congratulations on your find, and thanks for keeping us updated.

I have some PC rarities myself, and I remember a few members seemed to collect such oddities. Sorry I didn't see this sooner, or I may have been able to help. I'm glad you got there, though!

  18. What rarities do you have? I might still be interested.

Physically, I have games that interested me over the years that are scarce.... things like old Elder Scrolls games (Daggerfall in particular), Ace Ventura (took forever to find!), Virus. All of those caused me some problems tracking down, although this was several years ago. I have friends with fairly impressive collections, and I work in a games shop, so if there are any specific titles you are after, let me know.

Oh, I have a sealed copy of Hitman 2 that I bought direct from the UK distributor the day it came out. A few weeks later, the game was recalled due to the mosque scene outcry. My copy is one of the original ones.

In other forms (e.g. abandonware), I have thousands of games. Of course, some of the nice ones to have are the more controversial ones - e.g. JFK Reloaded and Final Solution (although I do not condone the latter at all, it is a dire game made by a bunch of racists).

I have a few scarcer versions of games around somewhere, like an original packaging Typing of the Dead, and the Half Life limited box set with T-Shirt. Actually, I think I have a few limited editions, come to think of it!
