The high price is because of very low availability for something like this. This is exactly like it was with PS3 Test/Tool, but when studios started ditching them and availability got higher the prices fell a whole lot, to maybe 20-30% of what they used to sell for (especially DECR units). The reason is simply that there aren't all that many people paying $1000 for stuff like this. The few that does overbid each other for the few units available. Once the top dollar market is saturated (that 32 piece collection there will easily do that) expect prices to fall a lot.

 

how do I get the Xbox onto development mode?

Never mind just comes up when turned on

Sadly that is something that comes on every development kit. Its just a test program.

If possible, could you take a picture of the launcher (the dashboard that comes on when the console launches)? It'll be much easier to see if there are builds on there

Those are the default test programs included with the SDK so sadly no doesn't seem those two have any builds.

 

Is that a good thing or bad thing?

 

Depends, With the no builds the price of the kits go down which is great for buyers like myself who only want the hardware but its bad for you since again price is lower and its bad since any potential cool games are not there.
It might be possible to recover data so try not to use them too much.

 

Okay I just started another one up and it has different stuff on it

This one when I click on them it says insert Kinect have a hundred of them but not the other half so can't see what it does
