The original, not the second? Yeah, fairly scarce, but you'll usually find a few copies on eBay UK. Which, incidentally, is a great place to go to answer a "how rare is...." question for yourself ;-) Use the completed items search, too!
I sold mine for around 60 quid recently. It is considered to be quite rare and is sort after. Bear in mind that there is a Suikoden 1 & 2 compilation for the PSP out in Japan, which may see a release in the UK or US in the future.
Was that PAL, though? That's what he was asking about. As you're in the US, I'm guessing it may well have been a US copy? BTW, its sought after ;-)
It was PAL version, sold in the UK in the summer 2006. I'm in the USA now, but I'm actually British. 60 GBP was the final price in A-grade condition, which is pretty standard. They are often on eBay. Same price for Suikoden 2, though it is rarer I think.
I didn't think it was rare until years later when I couldn't find it again.. >=/ b\c my first contact with the game was when I rent it a few times.. so that made me think that it wasn't that rare xD unfortantly I never bought it
Suikoden is a nice game in that it is unusual for an RPG in having so many characters and the massive battle sections, but the content and storyline is rather poor in my opinion. It really felt like a 16bit RPG and reviews at the time condemned it as such (though it was under-rated). If you were to buy only one of the Playstation Suikoden games then use the money on Suikoden 2. It's basically the same game but with far more polish and much better gameplay. The chef challenges are a hoot!
