The Saturn is a beloved System and Mostly I want to get one for Nights and Burning Rangers. But Then what? Awesome Saturn games seem to have totally gone over my head. All I know is the Saturn is home to superior versions of Thunder Force V and Mega Man 8 Considering alot of stuff is getting reissued on PS2 or enhanced I'm not really sure. Panzer Dragoon Saga and Radient Silvergun alone will cost me my soul and the Soul of a friend and I probably need to get a girl pregnant and offer the child as a Sacrifice to get those two games. So.......what's the saturn have to offer? I'm totally lost
In my opinion if there is one game you want to play that is a Saturn exclusive then it's worth getting one. Other than that a search here or in any other game forum should give you enough recommendations. As to PDS - learn some Japanese and get the Japanese version for peanuts. And Radiant Silvergun - if you get it directly from someone in Japan it shouldn't cost you more than $140 which is like two or three new games for a current-gen system. Again, if you want to play it, it is worth the money.
Saturn is the best console for 2D shooters and 2D fighting games. And then it has a plethora of amazingly awesome games after that. Panzer Dragoon trilogy, Guardian Heroes, Shining Force III, NiGHTS, Astal, etc.
Myst was fun and Riven which is getting increasingly harder to find in a good condition. And Nights, Astal, Sonic Jam and R, If you import the other two scenarios of Shining force its fun. Cyber Speedway is short but it was kind of fun. If you want to burn Return Fire there is a copy floating around. On a side note has anyone played a game called Willy Wombat and was it any good ?
The Saturn is a legend. Get one and you ll soon find yourself more and more attached to it. Sure, the games you mention are all superb, but there's still more stuff that only when YOU and YOU ALONE dig for and play, then you will realize the true value. Each gamer has to discover their own games - it's a risk but the pleasure is grand. I found myself risking quite alot of money when i first bought my 64DD, considering it's only got 8 games. Nevertheless, my curiosity payed off - i wouldn't trade my 64DD set for anything else.
If you like isometric platformers its really good. Its made by Westone, the people that made Wonder Boy back in the day, and all the voice acting is in English so its possible for you to follow the story (all the text is in Japanese though). I dig it, and like it a lot more than Whizz. Truer words have never been... er... typed.
You need a reason to have to want a Saturn? If you need a reason then I'd give up gaming now... Basically if there is a genre or game you like then there is likely to be a decent enough game of it on the Saturn.
Honestly I was never really interested in the Saturn when it Came out. I have a Saturn Pad to play fighters on my Dreamcast with. I am a huge Shmup fan and 2d fighter fan so I know i'm covered there though the PS2 Rivals the Saturn in both. Also alot of Saturn Games were made Sega Ages titles. But I have some free space in my entertainment center and the Saturn would fit just nicely. I know it had some unique games I just need my memory jogged a bit. Better to ask here than Dig out all my Old EGMs. Also seems Saturn stuff is easier to get than say Dreamcast stuff.
Good Saturn stuff is indeed easier to get than good DC stuff because there’s more of it  The Saturn is a wonderful system. Sure there's a load of crap on it that you may have to go through to find the gems but still there's enough great titles on the Saturn to easily make a 100 title strong library!! I now own about 850 Japanese Saturn games but I still manage to find new good to great titles out there. games that I've never even heard of until I found them in the corners of indie game shops. yep, or if you must, a western one with a mod chip but if the mod chip dies........ How about buying the quality set I have in the sales section for 200 pounds. That's got some very good games with it including about 8 or more shooters. Yakumo
Mmm... I would disagree there. If you take Cave away from the PS2 it doesn't have much outside of collections, and if you take away big name franchises (Gradius, Raiden, R-Type) from the PS1 it doesn't have much either. With the Saturn you could take away any one developer and its shooter library would still be the shit. And it says a lot when the Konami collections are pretty much mid tier titles in the library. ;-) Then again, I don't like Cave and I'm a complete Tecno Soft fanboy... and given that the Saturn is the ultimate system for Tecno Soft shooters... Then again, Batsugun, Battle Garegga, and Radiant Silvergun are all exclusively on the Saturn. So that definitely helps out a "little" bit too. ;-)
I gotta say, I got Burning Rangers and just can't get into that game. I just don't like it. I think it's because I'm playing it nowadays, vs back then.
I don't know about Burning Rangers. I played it till the end earlier this year for the 3rd time and I still found it fun. I've never played the English version but in the Japanese version the way the voices tell you where to go really adds to the game. It's as if your playing online or something with another player reading the map or giving you advice. Yakumo
I love Burning Rangers, though its not in my top 10 for the Saturn. My top 10 FAVORITE games on the system would be as follows: 01. Blast Wind 02. Radiant Silvergun 03. Hyper Duel 04. Panzer Dragoon Saga 05. NiGHTS 06. Shinrei Jusatsushi Taromaru 07. Guardian Heroes 08. Panzer Dragoon II Zwei 09. Fighters Megamix 10. Batsugun I know I'll get a lot of funny looks for Blast Wind, but its seriously probably my favorite game ever made. I love it. The music is uncontested in so far as shooter soundtracks. Nothing can touch it and I doubt anything ever will. The final boss theme song ("Judgement Ray") is my music on myspace. And while a lot of the "hardcore shooter crowd" will look down on it for being "easy", I'd like to see them 1LC it with 8 lives or play through it on Very Hard, or better yet, play through it with the 2P ship. But, thats why I love it. If you want to be challenged, Blast Wind can provide. If I just want to relax and play through a shooter real quick, Blast Wind delivers there as well. And no matter what, I have a blast playing it regardless of what I'm going for. I played through it TWICE tonight, two times IN A ROW even, trying to finally top the high score chart over at shmups.com. And I did it!!! It was awesome. There's just so much hidden stuff in that game and you just have to know it so well to get good scores, its great. Everything else on my list is probably standard though. Except maybe Hyper Duel and Taromaru. But eh, I love both of them, and loved both of them when they only cost double digits. ;-)
Region mod. That's what I plan on doing once I get a Saturn. 2 or so points, and it's Japanese. Get a switch and a few more points, and it's both
There are a lot of great games on saturn, shooters and fighters, most of them are only available in Japanese. But you could find some cheap domestic games as well: virtua cop 1 & 2, VF2, fighting vipers & megamix, duke nukem 3d, quake,... Rixalis: you can find a video and some screenshots of Willy Wombat at satakore.com. It is a great games but the 3D is sometimes awful to play with.
on the topic of which saturn is the most suitable, i d say invest in one of those multi-region saturns (provided u can find one) it will come in handy when tasting all the goods of Saturn
Over at Estarland I found 2 a US model for alittle over $50 and a $94 Japanese Grey Saturn. They also have the net link system, Kind of useless now but a good collectors item I guess.
Guys, Saturn region switching is a matter of jumpers, just like in the Neo Geo. It's trivial to install a switch, which makes any US consoles play JPN region games and vice versa. The Saturn was the reason that I got into fighting games. Marvel Superheroes vs. Street Fighter is still my favorite 2D game to this day, That Capcom was able to get arcade-perfect results out of the Saturn (with the additional RAM cartridge) was phenomenal for the time. A lot of the best Neo Geo CD fighters were also ported to the Saturn too, with consistently good results. There are also a ton of experimental fighters that tread outside of the world of one-on-one martial arts, like Elan Doree and Anarchy in the Nippon. And games like DOA and VF2 don't even need to be introduced, as they're so ubiquitous and still so good.
