I have a 200 watt receiver, it can do 4-16 ohm speakers.

I hooked up my 8 ohm jbl's and it sound terrible. Like terrible clipping and garbage.

I tried some small 4 ohm speakers and it is fine.

I am guessing the switching circuitry is bad?

Not sure if this might help but I remember one of my older Pioneer amps has a settings where you can set the ohms to 6 or 8, so it matches the speaker rating. Maybe yours needs this adjustment as well

What brand receiver is it? I have a pioneer (and Accent Acoustics drivers and sub,, not cheap BTW $1000 not cheap lol) and it was doing funny things ....... till I read the user Manuel..
It may sound silly but check the polarity and maybe use better cabling to the speakers.....

    Hope this helps
