I`ve just been re-reading the "Ultimate History of Video Games" and was wondering whether the rest of you have any favourite video games related books.

It's quite a good book, leaves out a lot on some systems, and has a bit of a US bias, but it`s well written and has some good quotes from this involved in the industry.

Of course you can pick up most of the information from the net, and it could be more detailed, but it`s nice to have it in book form and is fun to read.

So any other books worth noting ?

Yu Suzuki Game Warks Vol. 1 -- very cool book, even if you can't make heads or tails out of the kanji... also comes with 5 good games.

  3. I'm particularly fond of "Game Over: How Nintendo Zapped An American Industry, Captured Your Dollars, And Enslaved Your Children" by David Sheff, found here: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...103-0051400-1880615?v=glance&s=books&n=507846

Despite it's overly sensational title, the book offers an EXCELLENT history of Nintendo and the console gaming scene from the early days of Pong et al. to just before Sony's Playstation hit. Wonderful read.

Also good is Masters Of Doom: How Two Guys Created An Empire And Transformed Pop Culture by David Kushner, found here: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/A...51462/sr=ka-1/ref=pd_ka_1/103-0051400-1880615

Again, in spite of a super corny title, this is a great book detailing the rise of id Software, John Romero's split from the company, and the resulting Ion Storm/Daikatana fiasco. Prolly not as exciting to someone primarily a console gamer, but cool nonetheless.

Finally, a great one to look for is the Metropolitan Museum Of Art: Family Computer 1983-1994 book. It can be found on eBay every now and then - it's the tall skinny white Japanese release that not only has pictures of nearly every Famicom game ever made and interviews with such noted names as Shigeru Miyamoto, Yuji Naka, Shigesato Itoi, and others, but the Japanese text has English translations throughout the whole book. An excellent purchase.

    Hope this helps!

I love the Book "Supercade", a visual history of videogames and arcadegames 1972- 1984. It's a really good book with many many facts, ~ 450 pages and really big pictures. ~ 30 €/$

High score is a very good one, provides history of each game company and has loads of historical pictures and box art, however it would mostly be considered a coffee table book, its very well done, though there are 1 or 2 screenshot errors in the montage of great game shots for each system, it does not ruin the book as all the other pictures are acuret.Highly reccomend it if you loved ultimate history of video games or game over, even though its mostly brief historys of most game companies.
